Hello wise people of the internet I’m on mobile so excuse my poor grammar but here goes
so I have a friend that is running a Ravnica based campaign and I had an idea for a monk character, he is a way of the shadow and I had an idea to make him a bounty hunter that specializes in getting kills fast and clean, so my question is what would his pay be per job? I read something on Reddit that said somewhere between 250-500 gp and I’m not sure about what it would be so if you wise people could educate me on that I would be most grateful. Thank you!
I agree with 6thLyran, it would likely be a calculation based upon the CR of the monster, say 25-50gp per CR level or something. Also, Bounty Hunters do sometimes bring people/beings back alive, so would your monk specialize in this also, or only the killing part? As a member of a party would your character split the bounty with the other party members? Does he have a reason to stick with the party other than them just helping with Bounties?
Thank you guys for the answers and I would guess that he could do some of that recon things as well I would doubt he’d split his money with the party if they didn’t help him perform the task but if the party rogue helps him break into a place he would split with the rogue if that makes sense, he would hang around the party most likely because he thinks they need protection or he is emotionally attached to one of the members and yes he would do captures but it depends on how the DM wants to shape the story but I was more trying to say that he would focus on rush jobs that are done in one fell swoop
I dont want to assume things about your table, or how long you've been playing so I wanted to ask a few more questions. How long have you been playing D&D? How big is your party? Would you be doing these missions solo if none of the rest of your party would want to go along? Would these be done while everyone else is sitting at the table?
I ask because in my experience, when you're playing at a table with others who are invested in the game/story/timeline, etc and you have one player who goes off and does their own thing while they're all just sitting around waiting, you're asking for a hard time from your other party members. There are too many posts around on reddit, here and other forums about people who steal the spotlight, go on solo missions, split the party, and various other 'lone wolf' type situations. D&D is very much a shared story experience, and from my perspective (also someone who plays a shadow monk), I take care to limit the amount of time I do things solo so as not to make the game boring for my other party members. So keep that in mind.
As for the bounty aspect of what you're talking about, in the game I run the party is doing jobs for a monster hunter guild for pay. In this instance each of the party members are taking part in the jobs, and if one person doesnt want to do the job, they either talk them into it or dont take the job. This is so they're all working together to accomplish the task. There are other story elements and tasks, but part of what they do is the bounty hunting aspect of it. Maybe you could work the bounty hunter aspect into having the party help as these bounties are way too hard for someone to do solo. Gives you a reason to stay with the party, work together, and become friends.

The GM is the one who would be setting payment. But it should probably be a multiplier based on the target's Challenge Rating.
Also, I think you've confused bounty hunters with assassins.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
