okay so while most of us will agree that the beast master sucks the hardest out of all the classes, i think i have created an roreplay heavy build that i can use to turn my companion into an livin god, so here is the concept:
-the animal companion can their masters proficiency bonus to their armor class and damage rolls
-an giant crab has an high natural armor bonus, low challenge rating and claws that lets them pick up and manipulate objects (this is important)
-if i cast awaken on my crab, it becomes sentient and learns one of my languages, thus letting me teach the crab how to use shields and one handed finesse weapons
-use magic items to increase his dexterity modifier to high amounts, maybe with several unused manuals of quickness and action if we teach him how to read.
-at 17th level, the crabs armor class (while wearing an shield) should be 13 + his dexterity + 6 + 2 + the enhancement bonus of the shield if it is an magical shield.
-maybe i can even teach him, if the dm is sufficiently kind, the fighting style my ranger uses, dueling or defense, to give him more armor class and more damage output
-using a rapier, he deals 1d8 + his dexterity + 6 damage at 17th level, and he has an attack bonus equal to his dexterity + 8 (since we add our own proficiency bonus to the attack rolls and the players handbook does not say that we do not also add the proficiency bonus of the monster to its attack rolls)
this build requires a lot of outside help to work, and might require you to make magic items you cannot find and requireing somebody else like an bard or an druid to cast awaken since it is not on your spell list, be that an NPC or an PC. Also the lore of this ranger, as an individual who wants to create an undefeatable god crab for some reason, needs his personal motivations for why to do so, is he worshipping this crab? is the crab is dearest friend, and awakening it caused the crab to make demands? and what do i do if the crab turns against me? And can this crab wear an belt of giant strenth?
what do y'all think of this

i am soup, with too many ideas (all of them very spicy) who has made sufficient homebrew material and character to last an thousand human lifetimes
Nice thinking outside of the box. Sounds decent but not great. I like seeing someone really put effort/thoughts into beast master pets. I feel this would be a lot of quests and a big portion of play sessions if you are aiming at decking out your crab. But if people want to go along with this, go for it.
yeah am never gonna do this, but gosh darn i can and that is just incredible. The idea that the beast companion you can have might potentially have the highest possible armor class an mortal can achive just amuses me and i just wanted to tell people this was possible. If using the revised ranger variant of the beastmaster subclass your companion gains abillity score increases, meaning you can increase it without magic items in an low magic campaign. I made this post not for advice but simply to tell the world that this is indeed possible
