So in a Roll20 homebrew campaign, our group just hit lvl 3 and I took my 3rd level in fighter again. I've been wanting my character to have a "coming to" moment, and the DM has been playing with Deities reaching out to me as my character struggles to find a purpose. I always intended for my character to become a paladin, even starting with 14 CHA to make the transition easy. My problem comes here:
I feel like it makes more sense for my character, RP wise and thematically, to multi-class sooner rather than later. I can see no advantage to push fighter to lvl 5 as it will be wasted when I get to paladin lvl 5. I went battlemaster at lvl 3, and he is really falling into his role as a leader. I am worried about being underpowered if I fail to pick up the lvl 4 ASI, and leave off multi-attack for too long. Is it worth being kind of weak for now, in exchange for better progression into the paladin ranks, or should I go ahead and take lvl 4 in fighter? Lvl 5? The DM has made it clear that he will go by book rules, and that multi-attack won't build for both classes. If I take paladin next level, I won't have two attacks/round until lvl 8, if I go all the way to lvl 4, I do pick up an ASI, but I won't have multi-attack until lvl 9, and I'll never get 5th level paladin spells. Any advice?
That second attack is the reason to jump to level 5. The second attack is a straight power upgrade that everyone should expect. You basically double your damage potential with it and you should not ignore it just because it is the only benefit. The fact that you don't get a third attack doesn't matter so much because as a Paladin you wouldn't get a third attack anyway. You should go for the second attack ASAP if you are only that far away. Honestly, I feel that if you started with Fighter and now are planning on Paladin, you should not worry about 5th level spell slots because you aren't likely to reach that late into the game in most campaigns anyways and your other party members can easily benefit you for that level of power. If you really want to wait that long and be underpowered for 4 levels, then go ahead, but it would be a large downside. Honestly, at this rate, I suggest talking with your DM about just dipping your toe into Paladin with one maybe two levels and focusing on Fighter more, but I would not wait to get the extra attack. It is absolutely that valuable even if you can't stack them. It is not a big deal if you aren't the maximum power, but if you are worried about that then you should stick with Fighter to get the Third and Fourth Attacks if you are even going to play about level 16.
I'd suggest nudging the DM gently (since he's clearly on board for the build) and maybe a nice pair of Gauntlets of Ogre Power will fall from the sky. *bam* Missing out on that ASI is no longer holding you back.
Smiting is nice, but Action Surge with two attacks is nicer. If you feel multiclassing makes the most sense with your character, then that is reasonable, but be well prepared to feel underpowered until you get to Paladin 5.
