I have always wanted to create a campaign centered around players playing Githyaki and Githerzerai characters. After reading MToF, I think it's time to explore this idea. I only have the basic idea for the campaign started...which begins something like the following:
The two main PC's are a Githyanki Fighter and a Githzerai Monk working for the Sha'sal Khou. These two characters were maybe brought together by Zetch'r'r after the Githyanki hijacked an Astral Skiff and freed the Githzerai from his prison cell in Tu'narath. They are now using as their base of operations as the group moves through the planes on their quests. At some point, these two should meet a Tiefling Sorcerer, a Fallen Aasimar Paladin and a Shadar-kai Rogue.
All PC's should have some kind of hook into the planar realm and the above characters seemed to fit the bill. The over-arching plot should be the group seeking to reunite the Gith...albeit maybe through different means. I am assuming both Gith would be getting some direction via psionic contact from Zetch'r'r, but the others could have other goals that just so happen to somewhat align with the Gith. This could mean the Tiefling is looking for an object that may bring back to life the dead god that Tu'anarth sits on. This resurrected god could defeat Yankith and 'break' her 'hold' on the Githyanki, thus paving the way for easier reconciliation between the Gith. Along these same lines, maybe the Fallen Aasimar Paladin 'fell' from grace after committing some act that disavowed him...like sacrificing his celestial standing through some act he committed in order to 'save' the Shadar-kai. Maybe the fallen assimar 'stole' the ritual or object that can resurrect the dead god or knows of its location (like in the other-dimensional belly of an Astral Dreadnought, nestled at the bottom of the Demonweb Pits or locked away in the library of the Fortress of Memories?).
Other plot hooks could come into play:
1) Vlaakith has sent kill teams to recover the silver sword and the astral skiff.
2) Infernal denizens seek to prevent the Tiefling Sorcerer (and party) from discovering the way to resurrect the dead god floating in the Astral Plane, home to Tu'narath.
3) Raven Queen is seeking her subject. Maybe they have knowledge regarding resurrecting the dead god as well. The Shadar-kai gets vague omens and portents about it, but it could be the Raven Queen wants the dead god resurrected for her unknowable reasons.
The characters:
Githyanki Fighter (Eldritch Knight)
Githzerai Monk (Way of Shadow)
Tiefling Sorcerer (Draconic Bloodline)
Fallen Aasimar Paladin (Oath of Vengeance)
Shadar-kai Gloom Weaver Rogue (Thief)
Drow Ranger (Hunter)
Lots more to work out...but there is the foundation. Through these characters we could tie adventures to the Astral Plane and the city of the dead god Tu'narath, Limbo and the Adamantine Fortresses, the Demonwebs of the Abyss, the Underdark, the Material Plane and Thay, Shadowfell and the Fortress of Memories, etc...
