Hello all. Relatively new to D&D (about 6 months) here, and I'm trying to delve into as much lore and story as I can, which has been very fun. However I need help finding something. In a campaign I've been playing in, my character Jamben discovered and befriended a female mastiff. I would like to name her after some dog or companion of legend Jamben had heard stories of. Do such dogs exist in any of the lore of Forgotten Realms? I'm having a hard time finding anything.
I'm guessing that you're going to have to make something up. No offense, but the first thing I thought when I saw the thread title was famous whats of the Forgotten Realms?

I thought I might have to. I just thought it'd be cool to reference a canon historical event or story. Thanks.
a female Mastiff. why not name her Dynaheir after the enchanter from Baldur's gate? sadly few know of "famous" animal companions with the exception of a hamster named Boo.
"the lord of murder shall perish, but in his doom he shall spawn a score of mortal progeny"

It does seem that famous canines are a little rare in Realmslore. Here are four dog references I was able to find. Maybe one of these is useful.
FR7: Hall of Heroes, p38: Canthus; Prince Tristan Kendrick’s dog; a moor hound from the isle of Moray.
LC1: Gateway to Ravens Bluff, the Living City, p26: King the Dog; actually Marcus Shadowdale reincarnated as a mixed-breed terrier.
FOR13: Secrets of the Magister, p75: Rivuryn; the faithful guard dog of a long-dead lord. The footstone marking this dog’s burial place marks one of the gates into the Magister’s refuge in Waterdeep.
Unapproachable East, p147: Nyella; a dog who belonged to the man who build the inn in Tinnir, a village in Rashemen. Her spirit still guards the inn.

I am . . . very impressed.

Course, I should probably mention that I'm not exactly an expert on the subject.

Looks like I'll be creating my own legendary story and my dog will be famous

The most legendary dog would probably be Kezef the Chaos Hound, but your character might not want to name the dog after him: http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Kezef
