Potion, common
You regain hit points when you drink this potion. The number of hit points depends on the potion’s rarity, as shown in the Potions of Healing table. Whatever its potency, the potion’s red liquid glimmers when agitated.
Potions of Healing
Potion of … | Rarity | HP Regained |
---|---|---|
Healing | Common | 2d4 + 2 |
Greater healing | Uncommon | 4d4 + 4 |
Superior healing | Rare | 8d4 + 8 |
Supreme healing | Very rare | 10d4 + 20 |
Notes: Bonus: Hit Points, Healing, Consumable
This shows up under Gear instead of Potion in the Add Items section.
🤣 hehe, premium content!
I found the basic healing potion which seems to have the category of "gear". If you are filtering for it in potions, it doesn't show up. Personally I think it's a bug. I think you should be able to tag an item as both "gear" and "potion".
i agree
Reading this info made me realize how merciful of a dm I am.
Having standardized prices for potions would imply having standardized prices for all magical items and potions, which is a 5e no-no. Economies in 5e are handled by individual DMs at their individual tables for whatever reason.
how much for a potion of healing? Did u say 50gp? Ud be wrong. XGtE brings us new rules on how to buy magic items, which a potion is.
1st off, u spend a week and 100gp to find a vendor. Then its [(d6+1)10gp]/2 for the item. d6x10 is the rarity and /2 is "for consumable items, like potions, or scrolls". Wanna have a little sippy to not die? 135g, please. Btw, your 1st adventure earned u that TOTAL per party member and u r lvl 4 now. And u can have an optional Complication, too, like its a scam!
**** this game...
Generally speaking, price depends very heavily on a campaign setting, how much gold the players are getting, ETC. You're likely best off just setting a price for fairly cheap and restricting access to higher-level healing potions until players are encouraged to use them, or just giving some to your players outright. You may not even need healing potions at all if one of the players has healing abilities.
However, since you asked about it, here's the table from Xanathar's Guide to Everything regarding rebalanced magic item prices, organized by rarity. For health potions specifically, I'd say that the average price in the fourth column seems like a pretty good base to work with as an asking price, and given that they're consumable and likely bought in bulk, feel free to go lower when haggling, depending on how many potions you're willing to give your players.

I don't think that's the case, but it wouldn't be too surprising knowing Wizards of the Coast. Maybe it's not classified as a magic item, but instead as equipment?
Agreed
It’s not going to happen, that’s going to differ from DM to DM and adventure to adventure. Suggested price for a common Potion of Healing is in the PHB @ 50 gold. As for the rest:
”Magic Items. Selling magic items is problematic. Finding someone to buy a potion or a scroll isn’t too hard, but other items are out of the realm of most but the wealthiest nobles. Likewise, aside from a few common magic items, you won’t normally come across magic items or spells to purchase. The value of magic is far beyond simple gold and should always be treated as such.” Chapter 5, Selling Equipment.
It's the action of the player that's "feeding" you. Then yur up & you can take your turn as you normally would.
nah probably 60gp regular, 240gp greater, 2400gp superior, 7500 supreme cause the latter two are VERY hard to come across.
either but probably the administer
why not?
yes, but you can still pour the potion into their mouths
this is an interesting one
Why do I sometimes see people with potions irl that have a “D20” in it? Is that another type of healing potion or was that like for looks?? (Newb to dnd)
Mostly I’ve seen in some you tube games, that players are given a little bottle with some colored stuff in it as well as one or two D4 or D6 dice in it. If their characters use a healing potion, they tip the dice out to roll how much healing they get.
I'm late, bit first time playing and searching for healing potion, saw your comment... but by math, it should be 50g, 100g, 200g, 250g... if you assume the pattern is true, 2d4, 4d4, 8d4, 10d4 ... by my mathical logic each d4 = 25g. This could also be applied to a local healer that heals for payment potentially. Maybe even give the person a discount of 20g per d4.
What does the apply +1 on the potion of healing do? I couldn't see any difference
