OK so I studied the OSE rules in a bit more detail and the different modifiers for the different stats/attributes are... odd. And I'm not a big fan of the race as class.
Race as class is literally an "old school" conceit, so a lot of OSR systems pay homage to it, at least the ones following B/X, BECMI and the super OG D&D that came before those two. Human as a race among many, and all races choosing a class wasn't a thing till AD&D. All elves were gishy, all dwarves were fighting stalwarts, all halflings were roguish, etc. ... the races were basically the game's subclasses and multi classes. But I can see how a modern player may not care for it.

I've heard good things about Swords & Wizardry but OSE is my go-to OSR game its formatted incredibly and is super easy to read and reference mid game
