Updating the D&D Beyond Toolset for the 2024 Core Rulebooks

This entry was updated on September 3, 2024, to clarify changes to the D&D Beyond toolset that are kicking off alongside Master Tier early access for the digital 2024 Player’s Handbook and will continue indefinitely.

This Changelog reiterates points found in the previous Updating the D&D Beyond Toolset for the 2024 Core Rulebooks and 2024 D&D Beyond Ruleset Changelog [UPDATE] updates. We wanted to keep these old posts visible to be transparent about the changes D&D Beyond is undergoing as part of the process of implementing the 2024 Core Rulebook, but they are now deprecated.

The 2024 Core Rulebooks are revising fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons, updating everything from base classes to spells to monster stat blocks. As the official digital toolset for the game, D&D Beyond is undergoing updates so that you can jump into play as soon as the new core rulebooks become available.

Below, we cover these key changes to D&D Beyond as well as what won’t be changing.

We’re committed to making the D&D Beyond experience excellent, and will be continuing to develop, improve, and innovate based on community feedback.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my previous character sheets be affected?

The game mechanics for your 2014 characters will not be impacted, and all spells, abilities, items, and conditions will display information in line with 2014 rules. Your previous character sheets will receive some updated terminology, as explained in “Changes in Terminology” below.

How do I differentiate between making a 2014 and a 2024 character? And how do I turn off viewing Legacy Content?

When you use the Character Builder to create a new character, you decide which sources will be used. The 2024 content will always be available, but you can choose to show or hide other sources in the Sources section. For example, 2014 content will be marked with a Legacy tag and will default to 'on.' If you do not want to see Legacy content, you can change the toggle to ‘off’ to hide those options. For more details, refer to “Marking Old Material with a Legacy Badge” and “Updates to the Character Builder and Character Sheet”.

How will tooltips and rules impact my 2014 character?

Rules and tooltips for 2014 characters with Legacy sources enabled will provide access to both 2014 and 2024 spells, actions, and items. Conditions, like Exhaustion, will show both the updated 2024 ruling and the 2014 ruling. Some terminology will be updated, but descriptions will stay consistent with the 2014 game mechanics. For more information, refer to “Updates to the Character Builder and Character Sheet”.

Will I still have access to the 2024 spells referenced in the first Changelog?

You will have access to all 2024 spells and classes that are available through the Free Rules, detailed in “Introducing the D&D Free Rules” below. Players who have purchased the 2024 Player’s Handbook will have access to all the content within the source.

How will spells work for my 2014 character class? How will they work for my 2024 character class?

Players using Legacy content as a source to play with a 2014 character class will be able to see both 2014 and 2024 spell lists. 2014 spells will be marked with a Legacy tag.

Players using 2024 content as a source will only see the 2024 spell list. For more details refer to “Examples of these Changes and Backwards Compatibility”.

Will relabeled features, like Heroic Inspiration and Species, reference 2014 or 2024 rules for my 2014 character?

Relabeled features will receive new language, but this language is still in line with the 2014 ruleset. For more details, refer to “Changes in Terminology” under “Updates to the Character Builder and Character Sheet”.

Will functions that consult spells (ex. Warlock invocations) be affected?

No, they will not. If you have 2014 content enabled, you will still be able to refer to 2014 versions of functions like invocations in your character sheet.

Introducing the D&D Free Rules (2024)

The 2024 Core Rulebooks introduce new and exciting updates to the fifth edition ruleset, and we want to give players a free and accessible way to experience them.

To celebrate early access to the digital 2024 Player’s Handbook for Master Tier subscribers, we’re also giving registered users a sneak peek into the D&D Free Rules (2024) by granting access to four base classes (Cleric, Fighter, Rogue, and Wizard), spells, and one subclass for each of these classes. These free materials are available under the Sources tab on D&D Beyond. The D&D Free Rules (2024) will be further expanded on September 17 to include the remaining core classes.

You can learn more about the D&D Free Rules (2024) here.

Access to the 2014 Rules and Homebrew Are Not Changing

You will not lose access to the Basic Rules (2014) or to your copies of the 2014 Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, or Monster Manual.

You’ll continue to be able to create characters in the Character Builder using all the player options found in the 2014 Core Rulebooks. This includes the classes, subclasses, species, backgrounds, spells, feats, and other options you enjoy today.

All the monsters found in the Monster Manual (2014) will also still be available for use in the toolset. 2014 game materials will be marked with a Legacy badge if there are updated versions of them in the 2024 Core Rulebooks.

Finally, existing homebrew will not be impacted by the changes we roll out. When you create new Homebrew, you will have the option to choose between 2024 templates and Legacy source templates.

Marking Old Material with a Legacy Badge

Starting with the 2024 Player’s Handbook and continuing through the release of the 2024 Monster Manual, we’ll be updating the Game Rules to flag older material.

The following materials from the 2014 Player’s Handbook will receive a Legacy badge in the game rules:

  • Classes
  • Subclasses that have a new version in the 2024 Player’s Handbook
  • Species
  • Backgrounds
  • Feats
  • Items
  • Spells from the 2014 Player’s Handbook and the Basic Rules (2014)
  • Monsters that have a new version in the 2024 Player’s Handbook

Adding Tooltips and Game Materials in the Toolset

As the 2024 Core Rulebooks release, we will add new game materials and updated tooltips to the toolset. This change will have varying degrees of impact on the information you’ll find on D&D Beyond and in its tools. See below for details:

Updates to the Character Builder and Character Sheet

The Character Builder will continue to allow players to choose the source of the character options, including the newly introduced 2024 content. The Character Sheet is the same for all content and will reflect the character options used to build the character. The Character Sheet was updated to reflect 2024 terminology with descriptions that are consistent with 2014 and 2024 game rules.

Switching Between the 2014 and 2024 Rules, Plus Updates to Sources

In the Sources section of the Home tab in Character Builder, you can already choose to show or hide sources. Your available content will be set to be shown by default, and you will choose what to hide when creating your character. The 2024 content will always be available, but you can choose to show or hide other sources. For example, 2014 content will be marked with a Legacy tag and will be defaulted on. If you do not want to see Legacy content, you can change the toggle off to hide those options.

Here are the updated categories you’ll be able to enable and disable:

  • Expanded Rules: Character options from other official sources, such as Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything
  • Legacy: Character options from the 2014 Core Rulebooks whose 2024 counterparts have been released. This category also includes other noncore content, such as One Grung Above.

Homebrew and each third-party source, such as Critical Role and Humblewood, will continue to have their own on/off toggles.

Changes in Terminology

You will continue to use the same character sheet for any character you build, regardless of the source. However, we will update the terminology to reflect the 2024 Core Rulebooks. This includes:

  • Inspiration will be renamed Heroic Inspiration
  • Initiative will display as the name Initiative Score when you click on the Initiative button
  • Proficiencies & Languages will become Proficiencies & Training
  • Racial Traits will be renamed Species Traits
  • Description will become Background
  • Cast a Spell will become Magic
  • Influence and Search have been added as actions

When you click into these terms on your character sheet, you will see new language. Though the language is updated, there are no differences between the 2014 and 2024 rules in these cases.

Here is an example of updated terminology that has no impact on gameplay mechanics. The first image references the 2014 rules, and the second image references the 2024 rules:

Conditions, like Exhaustion, will show both the 2024 and 2014 text, marked with a Legacy badge.

New Options in the Character Creation Process

To keep in line with changes to character creation in the 2024 Player’s Handbook, the steps you follow in the Character Builder will be updated:

  • Current: Home > Race > Class > Abilities > Description > Equipment
  • Updated: Home > Class > Background > Species > Abilities > Equipment
Backwards Compatibility with 2014 Material

You will continue to be able to play with game materials from the 2014 ruleset. Much of this older content will be flagged with the Legacy badge and be usable with the 2024 rules.

However, if an older subclass was updated for the 2024 Player’s Handbook, that subclass will not be useable with the 2024 class.

If you are playing a 2024 character class, but using a subclass not updated in the 2024 Player's Handbook, that character will still consult the 2024 spell list.

There will be no change in your experience if you choose a 2014 subclass and play it with its 2014 class.

Examples of these Changes and Backwards Compatibility

Here are a few examples of these changes in action:

  • You create a Cleric using the 2024 Player’s Handbook as your source. At level 3, you get to choose a subclass. You own the 2014 Player’s Handbook and decide you want to use the Knowledge Domain subclass from that book. You may select it in the Character Builder. As you level up, your subclass features will unlock according to the Cleric’s progression in the 2024 ruleset. Further, the Domain spells you receive will be the 2024 versions of the spells.
  • You create a Sorcerer using the 2024 Player’s Handbook as your source. You also own Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, which has the Aberrant Mind subclass. At level 3, you want to take the Aberrant Mind as your subclass. You may only choose to use the 2024 version of the subclass, which is known as the Aberrant Sorcery. This does not affect your ability to use the 2014 version of the subclass with the 2014 Sorcerer.
  • You create a Warlock using the 2014 Player’s Handbook as your source. You want to select the Fiend for your subclass. Because you are playing with the 2014 Warlock, you can only choose to use the old version of the subclass.
  • You have a 2024 Wizard who has just leveled up. Because you are playing with a 2024 character, you must choose your new spells from the 2024 list of spells.
  • Your Dungeon Master wants you to create a character for their Tomb of Annihilation campaign. You create a Fighter using the rules in the 2024 Player’s Handbook and want to take the Anthropologist background from the adventure. You select the background. Because of the revised character creation rules in the 2024 Player’s Handbook, you will need to select an Origin feat. Similarly, you will adjust your ability scores by increasing one score by 2 and a different one by 1, or by increasing three scores by 1.
  • Your character was created using the 2024 ruleset. They have a Greataxe equipped and have the Weapon Master feat. On your character sheet, when you click on the Greataxe in your inventory, you will see the rules for the Greataxe’s mastery property, Cleave.
  • Your character was created using the 2014 character options. They have a Greataxe equipped but have not taken the Weapon Master feat from the 2024 Player’s Handbook. When you click on the Greataxe in your inventory, you will not see the rules for the weapon’s mastery property. If you later take the Weapon Master feat or a feature that unlocks weapon mastery, you will see the rules for weapon mastery on your items.
  • You want to reference the rules for Exhaustion, which were overhauled in the 2024 Player’s Handbook. When you navigate to conditions on your character sheet and click the entry for Exhaustion, you will see the 2024 ruling for the condition. You will also see the 2014 rules for the condition. The 2014 rules will be marked as Legacy.
  • You have an existing Cleric character created with 2014 rules. Legacy content is already enabled as a source. You would like to prepare Healing Word. When you click into your known spells, you will have the option to choose from either the 2014 or the 2024 version of the spell.
  • You would like to create a new Cleric character with 2014 rules. Legacy content is enabled as a source. You would like to prepare Healing Word. When you click into your known spells, you will have the option to choose from either the 2014 or 2024 version of the spell.

Other Changes in Terminology

In the Character Builder and elsewhere on D&D Beyond, you will see updates to other game terminology.

Species, Subrace, Variant Race

Race will be changed to Species and Variant Race will become Variant Species. In the D&D Beyond marketplace, you will also see Subrace become Species Option.

For older sources such as the Shifter from Eberron: Rising from the Last War, you will still see references to Race and Subrace. Material from previous books that has been revised in new releases will receive a Legacy badge. For example, the 2014 Elf species page will receive a Legacy badge.

Updated Names of Actions

The names of certain actions have also been changed. For example, the Use an Object action is now the Utilize action and the Cast a Spell action has become the Magic action. These will be reflected on D&D Beyond.

We remain committed to making D&D Beyond a fantastic experience for our community. From all of us on the D&D team, we thank you for joining us on this journey!

[DEPRECATED] 2024 D&D Beyond Ruleset Changelog [UPDATE]

Last week we released a Changelog detailing how players would experience the 2024 Core Rulebooks on D&D Beyond. We heard your feedback loud and clear and thank you for speaking up.

Our excitement around the 2024 Core Rulebooks led us to view these planned updates as welcome improvements and free upgrades to existing content. We misjudged the impact of this change, and we agree that you should be free to choose your own way to play. Taking your feedback to heart, here’s what we’re going to do:

Players who only have access to the 2014 Player’s Handbook will maintain their character options, spells, and magical items in their character sheets. Players with access to the 2024 and 2014 digital Player’s Handbooks can select from both sources when creating new characters. Players will not need to rely on Homebrew to use their 2014 player options, including spells and magic items, as recommended in previous changelogs.

Please Note:

  • Players will continue to have access to their free, shared, and purchased items on D&D Beyond, with the ability to use previously acquired player options when creating characters and using character sheets.
  • We are not changing players’ current character sheets, except for relabeling and renaming. Examples include Races to Species, Inspiration to Heroic Inspiration, and Cast Spell to Magic.

We’re dedicated to making D&D Beyond the ultimate digital toolset for Dungeons & Dragons, continuously enhancing the platform to ensure you can create, customize, and play your game just as you envision it. From your first one-shot to multi-year campaigns and everything in between, we're grateful to be on this journey with you.

[DEPRECATED] Updating the D&D Beyond Toolset for the 2024 Core Rulebooks

This changelog is no longer accurate. For updated information, please reference the changelog Updating the D&D Beyond Toolset for the 2024 Core Rulebooks.

The 2024 Core Rulebooks revise fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons, updating everything from the base classes to spells to monster stat blocks. As the official digital toolset for the game, D&D Beyond is undergoing updates so that you can jump into play as soon as the new core rulebooks become available.

These updates kick off alongside the launch of early access for the 2024 Player’s Handbook and will continue even after the release of the 2024 Monster Manual.

Below, we cover key changes to D&D Beyond as well as what won’t be changing.

What Isn’t Changing: Access to the 2014 Rules and Homebrew

You will not lose access to the Basic Rules or to your copies of the 2014 Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, or Monster Manual.

You’ll continue to be able to create characters in the Character Builder using the classes, subclasses, species, backgrounds, and feats found in the 2014 Player’s Handbook. All the monsters found in the 2014 Monster Manual will also still be available for use in the toolset. These materials will be marked with a Legacy badge if there are newer versions of them in the 2024 Core Rulebooks.

Finally, existing homebrew will not be impacted by the changes we roll out. The exception to this is for homebrew that includes tooltips in their descriptions. We are updating tooltips and, therefore, homebrew that uses them will see these changes reflected.

Marking Old Material with a Legacy Badge

Starting with the 2024 Player’s Handbook and continuing through the release of the 2024 Monster Manual, we’ll be updating the Game Rules to flag older material.

The following materials from the 2014 Core Rulebooks will not be updated and will instead receive the Legacy badge:

  • Classes
  • Subclasses that have a new version in the 2024 Player’s Handbook
  • Species
  • Backgrounds
  • Feats
  • Monsters

Updating Tooltips and Game Materials in the Toolset

With the rules revision, we are updating game materials in the toolset and in tooltips to be in line with the 2024 Core Rulebooks. This change impacts the information you’ll find on your character sheet, in tooltips, and that is linked in the compendium.

The following rules will be updated:

  • Core gameplay definitions
  • Armor Class
  • Saving Throws
  • Skills and Abilities
  • Alignment
  • Senses (Blindsight, Darkvision, Tremorsense, Truesight)
  • Area of effect definitions

Aside from a few exceptions, all entries for mundane and magical items, weapons, armor, and spells will also be updated to their 2024 version. For magic items, most of those changes will come with the release of the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide. Further, all tooltips and links to monsters will also be updated to point to their newest version.

The exceptions to these changes include the following:

  • Feeblemind and Branding Smite will be archived and replaced with Befuddlement and Shining Smite, respectively. If you already have Feeblemind and Branding Smite on your character sheet, they will remain there until you remove them, after which you will have to add Befuddlement and Shining Smite to your spell list. We took this step to avoid confusion for players who may be unaware that Feeblemind and Branding Smite have new versions under different names.
  • The Net weapon and all magic weapons that use it as a base weapon (e.g., +1 Net) will be archived and replaced with the Net adventuring gear.

Backwards Compatibility with 2014 Material

You will continue to be able to play with game materials from the 2014 ruleset, including:

  • Classes
  • Subclasses
  • Species
  • Backgrounds
  • Feats

This older content will be flagged with the Legacy badge. In many cases, it will be usable with the 2024 rules. If a subclass received an update in the 2024 Player’s Handbook, you will not be able to use the older version with the 2024 class. However, you can continue using it with the 2014 class.

Examples of these Changes and Backwards Compatibility

Here are a few examples of these changes in action:

  • You create a Cleric using the 2024 Player’s Handbook.
  • You create a Sorcerer using the 2024 Player’s Handbook. You also own Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, which has the Aberrant Mind subclass. At level 3, you want to take the Aberrant Mind as your subclass. You can choose to use the 2024 version of the subclass, which is known as Aberrant Sorcery.
  • You create a Warlock using the 2014 Player’s Handbook. You want to select the Fiend for your subclass. Because you are playing with the 2014 Warlock, you can only choose to use the old version of the subclass.
  • Your character has a Greataxe equipped on their character sheet or you hover over the Greataxe tooltip in one of your books. You'll see an updated entry for that weapon that includes mention of the Greataxe’s mastery property, Cleave.
  • You want to reference the rules for Exhaustion, which were overhauled in the 2024 Player’s Handbook. When you navigate to conditions on your character sheet and click the entry for Exhaustion, you'll see the new rules for the condition, not the 2014 version of them. In a similar vein, any tooltips referencing Exhaustion will show the 2024 rules of the condition. If you want to see the 2014 rules for Exhaustion, you will need to navigate to its entry in the Basic Rules or in the 2014 Player’s Handbook in the compendium.
  • Your character has Healing Word prepared and you want to cast the spell. When you click on the spell on your character sheet, you will see the new version of Healing Word. However, you can still find the old version of Healing Word in your copy of the Basic Rules and the 2014 Player’s Handbook in the compendium.
  • An adventure you own and that was published after the 2024 Player’s Handbook references the Mastiff from the 2014 Monster Manual. When you click a link in the adventure to the Mastiff, you will be taken to the 2014 version of that monster.
  • In another case, you purchase an adventure that was released after the 2024 Monster Manual and that references the Mastiff. When you click a link to the monster’s stat block in that adventure, you will be taken to the Mastiff’s newest version.
  • UI Updates to Monster Stat Blocks

The 2024 Monster Manual introduces changes to monster stat blocks. As a result, we will update the UI for monster stat blocks found throughout the D&D Beyond toolset. We do not have a precise date for when you will see these changes, but you can expect them before the release of the 2024 Monster Manual.

    Notably, you’ll see these changes:

    • Monsters will display an Initiative and Initiative score
    • All monster saving throw bonuses will be shown
    • Armor Class will be shortened to AC
    • Hit Points will be shortened to HP
    • Damage Vulnerabilities will be shortened to Vulnerabilities
    • Damage Resistances will be shortened to Resistances
    • Damage and Condition Immunities will be combined into a single Immunities section, separated by a semicolon
    • Challenge & Proficiency now follows this new format: CR ## (XP ##, PB +#)
    • The monster’s features will be moved to the Traits section
    • Books in the compendium will still reflect the original formatting used for monster stat blocks. For example, if you go into the 2014 Monster Manual, all monster stat blocks in that book will have their original formatting.

Updates to the Character Builder and Character Sheet

The 2024 Player’s Handbook streamlines the steps to creating a character and updates the character sheet. The Character Builder and digital character sheet are being updated to reflect these changes as well as changes in game terminology.

Changes to the Character Creation Process

To keep in line with changes to character creation, the steps you follow in the Character Builder will be updated:

      Current: Home > Race > Class > Abilities > Description > Equipment

      Updated: Home > Class > Background > Species > Abilities > Equipment

Updates to Sources and Book Categorization

In the Home tab of the Character Builder, you can already enable and disable game material under the Sources section. We’re tidying up this section and adding the option to enable or disable 2014 player options.

Here are the updated categories you’ll be able to enable and disable:

    • Expanded Rules: Game materials from other official sources, such as Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything
    • Legacy: Game materials from the 2014 Core Rulebooks whose 2024 counterparts have been released. This category also includes other noncore content, such as One Grung Above.

Homebrew and each third-party source, such as Critical Role and Humblewood, will continue to have their own on/off toggles. The core D&D rules from the 2024 Core Rulebooks do not have a toggle as they are always considered enabled.

    Changes in Terminology

The following terminology will be updated in the character sheet to bring it in line with the 2024 Core Rulebooks:

    • Inspiration will be renamed Heroic Inspiration
    • Initiative Score will be displayed when you click on the Initiative button
    • Proficiencies & Languages will become Proficiencies & Trainings
    • Racial Traits will be renamed Species Traits
    • Description will become Background

    Other Changes in Terminology

In the Character Builder and elsewhere on D&D Beyond, you will see updates to other game terminology.

    Species, Subrace, Variant Race

Race will be changed to Species and Variant Race will become Variant Species. In the D&D Beyond marketplace, you will also see Subrace become Species Option.

For older game materials, such as the Shifter from Eberron: Rising from the Last War, you will still see references to Race and Subrace.

D&D Beyond Is Seeing Big Changes

Over these coming months, you’re going to see a lot of updates to D&D Beyond and its suite of tools. In updating the website and toolset for the core rules revisions, we hope to make it easier for you to jump into these exciting new rules and player options.

We thank you for joining us on this journey!

    July Updates

    Tagging of 2014 Core Rulebooks

The team is hard at work readying the site for the biggest release in fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons. The first bit of preparation for the launch of the 2024 Core Rulebooks begins with tagging the 2014 books. You’ll now see that the Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, Monster Manual, and Basic Rules all have “(2014)” affixed to the end of their names and in various other areas of the site.

    New Releases

We had two exciting releases in July.

Quest from the Infinite Staircase is the latest adventure anthology. It features six beloved D&D adventures, including the truly bizarre Expedition to the Barrier Peaks and a wonderful retake on the classic romantic adventure Beyond the Crystal Cave. Quests from the Infinite Staircase launched with full Maps support, so you can jump straight into any of these nostalgic adventures.

Book of Ebon Tides from Kobold Press is a setting book that contains everything you need to take your campaign to the dim and daunting Shadow Realm. In this book, you’ll find umbral monsters, magic items, locales, and NPCs, including several tactical maps all ready to use in the D&D Beyond VTT.

    Maps Updates

Four books were added to Maps, two new and two backfilled titles:

    Subscriber Perks

This July, we busted out the bling with four filigreed character portrait frames that tie in with D&D’s 50th anniversary.

    Avrae

We removed the case sensitivity of the !i command, a nice quality-of-life improvement owed to Dusk, one of our moderators.

    April - June 2024

    June Updates

    New Releases

Grim Hollow: Player Pack is a new release by Ghostfire Gaming. It’s great for those of you looking for something a little more morose and to expand play, whether you’re combining it with Lairs of Etharis and Dungeons of Drakkenheim or other books. This collection of player options curated by Ghostfire Gaming and D&D Beyond features two species, six subclasses, ten spells, and twelve magic items all perfect for your dark D&D game.

    Maps Updates

Maps received a big feature update that’ll be perfect for all you Wizards screaming, “I don’t care how big the room is, I cast Fireball!” You can now use Area of Effect templates on Maps for circle, square, cone, and line effects. Each template can not only be resized, but you can choose different colors and symbols to be applied, making it easy to distinguish your Silence from your Darkness.

We also had four backfill titles added to Maps:

    Quality-of-Life Update for Equipment Listings

There’s been a small update to the equipment listings; you can now access vehicles directly from that page via the View Vehicles button in the top right.

    Subscriber Perks

In our ongoing celebration of D&D’s 50th anniversary, we dropped a series of anniversary-themed backdrops for your character sheets.

    Avrae

Our team of devs as well as community contributors work hard to maintain and improve the D&D Discord bot. This June, Avrae saw two large updates:

    • Homebrew content, such as monsters, spells, and items, can now be properly looked up with slash commands. Shoutout to @Croebh!
    • We had an infrastructure update to move from DocumentDB (Mongo) 3.6 to DocumentDB 5.0.

You’ll also notice smaller changes. For example, monster embeds are now closer to their source material (thank you to @Lathaon).

    April & May Updates

    Marketplace Refresh

On April 30, we launched our new look marketplace, adding several new features. Physical book purchases and bundles, which previously had to be purchased externally, can now be purchased through the D&D Beyond marketplace*. Additionally, adding both the physical and digital versions to your cart will automatically apply the relevant bundle pricing. The new marketplace also adds a wish list, the ability to save payment information, and new filters and categorization to make finding the book you were looking for even easier.

Some features of the old marketplace were not carried over and have been sunsetted. These include digital book bundles such as the Legendary, Player, and Adventure bundles and à la carte purchasing options from within books. Discounts and book credits from previous purchases will still apply. For more details on the new marketplace, see the Marketplace FAQ.

    Jasper’s Dice Set Update

    March 22, 2023

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Jasper’s Game Day had a mission to raise funds for suicide prevention and awareness. Through this, they strove to reduce the stigma around talking about mental health so the world could start to treat it just like physical health. In doing so, they sought to help prevent suicide, and not just respond to the aftermath. They wanted to bring the community together and show everyone that they are not alone!

From its inception in 2017 to its closure in 2023, Jasper’s Game Day raised over $300,000 for suicide prevention and awareness.

In 2022, Jasper’s partnered with Die Hard Dice to produce a TTRPG dice set in support of the charity. The set was replicated digitally on D&D Beyond.

As Jasper’s Game Day closed its doors in 2023, we will be removing the dice from the D&D Beyond marketplace and donating the remaining proceeds to The Jed Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports mental and emotional health and suicide prevention in teens and young adults. For more information on this incredible organization, visit jedfoundation.org.

If you’ve previously purchased or gifted the dice, no need to worry—they will remain a part of your digital dice collection.

We are incredibly grateful to Fenway and her team for allowing us to be a part of such an amazing legacy and would like to remind everyone that a community of friends and family is behind you, even in your darkest times. You are not alone!

    February Updates

This month, we kicked off celebrations for D&D’s 50th anniversary, released new features on Maps, and a whole lot more. Check out all the news below!

    D&D Beyond Maps Updates

We released a new Dev Update on our YouTube channel. It highlights the new books and amazing new features released on D&D Beyond Maps, as well as what’s to come.

Check out these features new to Maps:

    • Draw has been added to the VTT! Direct your players’ attention with arrows, circle a monster or key feature of a map, or just doodle during a short rest. Usable by DMs and players, this feature uses the same color scheme as the token color rings.
    • The Connected Players Menu allows you to see which players are connected to the VTT and with which characters. In the midst of combat and need to reference a character sheet? Just click on the character name in the Connected Players Menu to open it!
    • Spectator View lets DMs see what their players see in the VTT, including fog of war, pings, and drawings. This is a handy feature for DMs who project their games onto a TV for player use or who just want to make sure their maps are set up correctly.

The following books were added to Maps this month:

As a tease of what’s to come, we’re planning on bringing in new functionality to build encounters and run combat in Maps. And, by the end of the year, you can expect to see our backlog of D&D titles implemented in the VTT. The Dev Update has more insights into all the hard work we’ve done and our plans for Maps and other D&D Beyond tools.

    Introducing Maps

    September 19th, 2023

    Hello, adventurers!

We’re excited to announce the Alpha launch of Maps on D&D Beyond today!

Maps is a new browser-based tool that lets Dungeon Masters and players participate in tactical gameplay using maps in a shared play space on D&D Beyond.

Maps is an Alpha launch, which means it’s not finished: it will be buggy, features basic functionality, and may even crash at times as its user base grows! Our intention is to gather player feedback and continue to improve the tool with added functionality. We’re committed to consistent improvements.

    Features supported at launch include:

Maps is included with the Master-tier subscription. Master Tier subscribers can launch and run a game on Maps for any registered D&D Beyond user. Dungeon Masters who would like to use the tool are encouraged to sign up for a 30-day free trial Master-tier subscription!

Dungeon Masters can launch Maps from the Maps Discovery page, while players can launch from their character sheet! The Discovery page is also where you’ll find the development roadmap, feedback portal, and FAQ. We have also published an article to serve as a light tutorial and guide as you dig in.

New Privacy Setting & Default Character Preferences

    July 17th, 2023

Hello, Beyonders! We are releasing a few quality of life improvements so that you can adjust DDB a bit more to your needs:

    1. We are adding a new privacy setting for your characters. As of now, you can set your characters accessible only to the fellowship of your campaigns. You can still make a character sheet private or fully public but campaign-only is going to be your default.
    2. You can now decide about certain default behaviors of the sheet. You can set if the sheet is automatically in the Underdark mode (default is "off") and whether modifiers or ability scores should appear at the top (the default is "modifiers on top").

    April - June 2023

    Roundup: May 4th - June 13th

Hey, Beyonders! Your friend the Party Wizard here, hoping that you're having the Hot Druid Summer of your dreams! Let's dig into the changelog!

Our June sub perks have been released, so if Elder Flames are interesting to you, you'll want to check out the Elder Flame digital dice set.

We've clarified our language on the site surrounding our One D&D Initiative and our 2024 fifth edition rulebooks, and you can read more in our most recent community update.

In addition to V2.34 of the mobile app being released for minor big fixes and improvements, we've also improved the navigation for Android- you can now easily switch between characters, books, listings, etc. We've also updated the following books on mobile to bring them up to parity with our web experience:

    • Candlekeep Mysteries
    • Monsters of the Multiverse
    • Princes of the Apocolypse
    • Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide
    • Tasha's Cauldron of Everything

Domains of Delight was released for the D&D Beyond compendium on our marketplace. Sales benefit our partners at Extra Life.

And of course, no changelog update is complete with an Avrae Update and we're up to v4.2.19 now- the details are available on github.

So long and have fun in the sun!

    Roundup: April 16th - May 4th

Hello, Beyonders! If you woke up this morning wishing D&D had a dragon that did blueberry stuff, today is your lucky day. This week we released Misplaced Monsters Vol. 1: six fantastic new monsters created, described, and drawn by kids, and brought to life by D&D designers and artists.

D&D Misplaced Monsters, Vol. 1 was created in partnership with Extra Life©, a fundraising program of the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals© that helps children receive crucial medical care.

All proceeds from the sale of this product go directly to the Seattle Children's© Hospital and Seattle Children's© Autism Center, supporting their mission to care for children and young adults of all backgrounds, regardless of their family's ability to pay.

Additionally, two updates to the D&D Beyond mobile app dropped, which include minor big fixes and improvements.

The latest Unearthed Arcana for playtesting the 2024 Core Rulebooks is live: it covers the rules on the Weapon Mastery property, updates to weapons, new and revised spells, several new feats, and five classes: Barbarian, Fighter, Sorcerer, Warlock, and Wizard.

And of course, what would a changelog be without an Avrae update? Find all the details on Github for v4.2.16.

    Spring Time Roundup: April 1st-15th

Spring is here and that means it's time to party with me, the Changelog Wizard. I mean wizard with the Changelog Party. Yeah, that's close enough for rock n' roll!

We've laid out a new welcome mat for people who are brand new to D&D! There's a cool D&D interactive video experience, and links to premade characters and campaigns to get folks playing faster! Check it out at playdnd.com. It's a great place to direct friends and family who are exploring D&D for the first time!

Not only that, but our new player guide now has a fresh coat of paint, we released our April perks for subscribers, and due to popular demand, we've re-released the Treasure Horde digital dice set to the marketplace. Y'all like your Mimics!

Good news for anyone who missed the legendary Sam Riegel's D&D Beyond Sea Shanty on the Ghosts of Saltmarsh Table of Contents: it's back!

The mobile app has an update- v2.31 for those keeping score- which adds new search filters and the ability to copy your characters on iOS, and minor big fixes and improvements for both iOS and Android.

And of course, if wouldn't be a changelog without a packed Avrae release, v4.2.15!

    See ya!

    January - March 2023

    Roundup: March 15th-31st

    Well hello, Beyonders!

It's time for another changelog, and that means updates to Avrae! New versions of our faithful Discord bot have rolled out, and you can find details in our Avrae logs.

Here's something pretty exciting, at least to me, the Party Wizard: We've been working hard the last few months improving your experience for a lot of our books by giving them a solid facelift- from correcting typos and upgrading the user experience, to making sure that the updates and errata available for published books are reflected in the D&D Beyond Compendium. This work is now done, hooray!

There's a new Druid & Paladin feedback survey on the One D&D playtest page, so get in there and make sure we know what you hated and what you loved about our most recent round of playtests! A survey response is infinitely more valuable than a tweet!

We've also updated the media section of the mega menu to include the Dragon Talk podcast, and our Community Update page, so go check both sections out.

We're also super pumped because premade characters have finally arrived on D&D Beyond. You can now easily claim level 1 characters built on the free basic rules and join one of three free campaigns (Lost Mines of Phandelver, Frozen Sick, and Prisoner 13) to start playing with your friends in seconds.

And finally, we released free game content based on Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves into the wild today for all registered users! It includes NPC stat blocks for the characters in the movie, magical items, and the Themberchaud dice set! Claim them here!

That's it for it now. See you on the next round!

    New Anonymous Homepage

    March 14th, 2023

    Hello Beyonders!

Our homepage from the beginning has focused on the well-initiated D&D player with only the tip of the hat to the neophyte. With that in mind, we've updated the anonymous version of the homepage to make it more helpful for someone who is brand new to D&D. You'll only see it if you log out, clear your cache, or visit the site from an incognito browser.

One fun addition on the anonymous homepage is a link to Before The Storm, a guided introductory “choose your path” adventure to give people a quick glimpse of playing a tabletop roleplaying game like D&D. Please feel free to share it with your family and friends!

    Weekly ~ish Roundup: March 3rd-10th

Top o' the morning to you all!

It's time for a weekly ~ish round-up. We have it on high authority from another notable Wizard (who shall not be named) that Wizards are never late, nor are they early. They post changelogs precisely when they... mean to. More or less.

First up, Avrae continues to gain more hit points with every release.

    • v4.2.11 added SimpleCombatant.is_hidden to quickly tell if a combatant is... hidden! Also we had a talk with Avrae and it will be friendlier with error messages when you put the arguments for !cc out of order.
    • v4.2.12 fixed an issue where a hidden combatant with negative max hp would not display their health at all.

Next, something fun! We've had a helpful fantasy name generator on the character sheet for a long while, and one of our artificers spruced it up. Now it allows you to shop for the perfect character name without changing the current character name or having to cycle through one option at a time. Click Suggest More until you find that perfect name, then click on it from the list to update your character name. How nice.

Fantasy name generator with multiple name options to pick

Meanwhile, you may have noticed a small banner near the footer of the page announcing an update to our privacy policy. The policy has been updated regarding new consumer privacy laws enacted in the United States. Read the updated privacy policy.

Lastly, As a registerd user, you can now claim the Thieves' Gallery to bring the heroes and villains of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves to your table as NPCs with stat blocks. Once claimed, they will be available in the compendium, game data listings, and encounters.

Whew! That's all for today. Until next time!

    Launched the D&D Community Update

    March 9th, 2023

We've launched the D&D Community Update, a central location for publishers, creators, and fans to stay up to date on One D&D playtests, community events, and information related to the SRD and Creative Commons. This page will cover news on community events and information related to the SRD and Creative Commons.

Those topics will not be addressed here on the changelog, so please check the new page for important community-facing updates.

    Wizards Authentication!

    March 7th, 2023

    Huzzah Beyonders!

You've asked and I've searched far and wide and finally found it in the wonderous city of Ravnica, where I persuaded the Izzet League to offer it as a gift, Wizards Authentication!

You can now create a D&D Beyond Account and Sign In with your Wizards account. For a long while now, we've heard that you want to use your own email to log in, and you can finally do so if you first create a Wizards Account.

As a cherry on top, you can also use it to access your account on the DDB Mobile app.

    Ta ta for now!

    Feats and Avrae 4.2.6

    January 30th, 2023

Party Wizard here to give updates and chew goodberries. And since I'm all out of goodberries...

We've consolidated multiple feats that were previously split due to system constraints! This is a cool one. In the past we've needed to split feats out based on whether they contained multiple options- for example, choosing INT, WIS, or CHA as a Spellcasting ability. We are excited to announce that we are now able to combine these feats, and in doing so, cut down on a ton of clutter and redundancy.

    Consolidated feats include:

Looks like if you've got a thing for feat, today is your lucky day. Users can also now add feats to their homebrew backgrounds! We're pumped to see what you come up with, creators!

And for dessert: We've also got some Avrae improvements and fixes in v4.2.6.

Howdy 2023! We're back with an early January roundup

    January 19th, 2023

Beyonders, the Party Wizard has been busy with updates. Let's jump in.

Backgrounds that grant Feats are live! Moving forward, when you select a background that includes a feat, well, you're going to get that feat on your character sheet.

We've also got the most recent updates and fixes in for Avrae:

Mobile updates are next, with versions 2.24 and 2.25 of the D&D Beyond mobile app:

    Android release notes:

    • You can now join a campaign by opening a link shared by the DM
    • We fixed an issue with duplicate information showing on subclass listings
    • We fixed showing duration in days for some spell listings
    • Performance improvements for spell management functionality
    • Fixed an issue with spell management not loading for some character classes

    iOS release notes:

    • You can now join a campaign by opening a link shared by the DM
    • We fixed an issue with duplicate information showing on subclass listings

We've also updated the Monster Manual to bring it up to current D&D Beyond standards. It's one of the earliest books in the compendium, and was in dire need of a fresh coat of paint:

    • We've refreshed the Monster Manual to be more functional, more accessible, and easier to use.
    • We've reuploaded the art for a higher quality, and frankly, much prettier experience.

Release of the Tyranny of Dragons 2-book Set

    January 17th, 2023

Today we finished work to consolidate Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat into a single new source called Tyranny of Dragons This project started in November 2022, and contains a number of sensitivity and errata-based changes. It also includes updated images, improved accessibility, and an overall facelift to be brought in line with current D&D Beyond compendium standards.

Will you lose access to your stuff? Nope! All existing owners of one or both books will be granted the new source- and if you have access to particular magic items or monsters, you won't lose them. The source listed on the game data listings will be updated to say 'Tyranny of Dragons'.

Moving forward, the new book will be available for purchase on the marketplace, while the older individual sources will no longer be for sale.

The old sources (Hoard and Rise) will only be receiving minor updates - users will need to use the new Tyranny of Dragons source for the most updated text/data/features.

    October - December 2022

Out for a long winter's nap

    December 16th, 2022

Hello Beyonders! It's been a full year even though we've been a bit quiet. The teams, and even me, the Party Wizard, are in for a long winter's nap. We will pick back up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed in early January. Until then, we wish you all, our beloved Beyonders, joyous holidays and a happy new year!

Behold! The Party Wizard is here!

    December 14th, 2022

Greetings, Beyonders- and welcome to the all new version of the D&D Beyond changelog. There's always been a changelog, but it wasn't exactly very easy to find- now updates are well organized, and front and center! The second issue was that the changelog was not written by me, the Party Wizard. What is a Party Wizard? I'm a digital entity who lives inside of D&D Beyond- I'm always cheering on your games and sending your dice rolls good vibes. Click around on the homepage enough, and you might even catch a glimpse of me!

I'm here to make sure you know about some of the work going on behind the scenes at D&D Beyond on a regular basis- especially the stuff that impacts you, like Compendium changes and Avrae updates. If you've got questions, thoughts, or concerns, you should head to our Discord! We wouldn't be where we are without you, so dig in, take a look, and let's keep the changelog party rolling!

Behold! I am the party wizard!

    Weekly Roundup: Dec 5th-9th

We're into December! Time flies, folks- even for Party Wizards like me. In December, two things are inevitable: Mariah Carey and D&D Beyond updates:

Additionally, the survey date for the One D&D Unearthed Arcana for the Clerics and Revised Species playtest has been adjusted from Dec 21 to Dec 22.

    Weekly Roundup: Nov 21st-25th

Turkey legs. Sorry, they're just on my mind- the thought process of a Party Wizard is a complex one! When I said 'turkey legs,' I meant to say "turkey legs.' I mean 'UA updates.' I'm hungry.

The feedback survey for One D&D UA #2 has been closed, and the Table of Contents & Compendium Page have been updated to reflect this. As a reminder, you can check in on all things One D&D. We want your participation!

    Weekly Roundup: Nov 14th-18th

Beyonders, your Party Wizard has a truly mythic update today. Well, it's an update to Mythic Odysseys of Theros among other things:

    • Map 4.2: Agora was misspelled as "Asora" in both the Table of Contents and in the caption beneath the map in Chapter 4.
    • A quick peek behind the curtain: we consolidated the Resilient feats into a single Resilient feat for testing purposes in preparation for Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen.
    • Any users that currently have one of the existing child feats equipped, such as Resilient (Charisma), will not see any change on their character sheet unless they remove it from the character.

    Weekly Roundup: Nov 7th-11th

Before we get into this week's updates, Beyonders, you might be asking: who is the Party Wizard? Well, I'm just a digital entity inside D&D Beyond here to help make your games better. Update on D&D vs. Rick and Morty

    October 28th, 2022

D&D vs. Rick and Morty Book Cover

As a result of our licensing agreement with Adult Swim expiring, Dungeons and Dragons vs. Rick and Morty will be delisted and removed from the marketplace. This means it will no longer be available for purchase on D&D Beyond.

What does that mean for anyone that currently owns it or has it shared with them? You'll still have complete access to the source and all of the contents within - we're not changing that or removing it in any way, shape, or form. In addition, you will be able to access it on the D&D Beyond Mobile app (again, as long as you already owned it or if it was shared with you).

    Mobile app v2.20

    • We released an update to the PHB and Basic Rules in the Mobile App! It resolves an issue with the mobile app where iPads set to "Book Display Style" and on a vertical orientation resulted in being unable to read the content.

    Avrae v4.1.13

    October 18th, 2022

All the details in the usual places.

    New Features

    • Add an -effects arg to !init reroll to clear all ieffects from all combatants, to ease resetting of combat
    • Add an AliasSpellbook.find(spellname) method to get a list of copies of that spell within the spellbook

    Improvements

    • Update the phrasing on -f fields in !help embed, to help clarify that inline fields are only inline to themselves and a max of 3 per 'row'
    • Only check the first three letters and case desensitize -with arg input for !cast, similar to what !save does for its input

    Bug Fixes

    • Adds direct handling for the Tales from the Yawning Portal entitlements

    Weekly Roundup: Oct 10th-14th

We've managed some 'manage spell' updates!

    • After multi-classing, spells that were on both spell lists were not able to be prepared/learned- for example, if you had a Level 8 Cleric/Level 1 Divine Sorcerer, going to the "Manage Spells" section of the character sheet made the shared spells (like Cure Wounds) unclickable so you couldn't learn or prepare it! Issue solved- prepare away!
    • Additional spells from Tasha's Optional class features would previously not appear until after preparing/learning a different spell. For instance, if you went to "Manage Spells" in the character sheet for your Druid and unprepared a Druid spell, none of the spells from the "Additional Druid Spells" optional feature would show up- even if it was enabled from the character builder! This has been resolved.

We've also made a number of book fixes. We...

    • Added a charge to the clockwork amulet magic item to improve the item's functionality on the character sheet.
    • Added 1 magic item from Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage and 1 magic item from Hoard of the Dragon Queen. These magic items were not previously created in our system. They have now been created and provided to all current owners of these books. Can you find what was missing?
    • Added tooltips for the new items in the appropriate compendium chapters
    • Fixed minor typos and tooltip issues in the Compendium and the Alkilith monster listing (non-errata changes)
    • Updated monster listing for Klauth to contain proper modifiers according to its proficiency bonus (non-errata)

    Weekly Roundup: Oct 3rd-7th

    Dearest user,

We've added an Action to the cleric's Destroy Undead class feature on the character sheet. This displays information about the feature in the Actions pane of the character sheet for all clerics of 5th level or higher.

There were two fixes, one to the Monsters of the Multiverse Compendium, and the other to Monstrous Compendium Vol 1: Spelljammer Creatures! We've resolved an issue where some of the compendium page slugs in the CP were overwritten by the DoSI migration causing it to be inaccessible to users (no user-facing changes other than restoring access).

Hey! Dragons of Stormwreck Isle is now live!

And finally, we've added a delete button for feats on the feat plane to allow users to delete feats that are deleted from homebrew. Go delete that feat!

    Avrae v4.1.12

To make sure that we're paying close attention and to ensure that everyone's voice is being heard, we've decided to extend the feedback survey duration. Statement on the Hadozee

    September 2nd, 2022

We wanted to acknowledge and own the inclusion of offensive material within our recent Spelljammer: Adventures in Space content. We failed you, our players and our fans, and we are truly sorry.

The campaign includes a people called Hadozee which first appeared in 1982. Regrettably, not all portions of the content relating to the Hadozee were properly vetted before appearing in our most recent release. As we continue to learn and grow through every situation, we recognize that to live our values, we have to do better.

Throughout the 50-year history of Dungeons & Dragons, some of the characters in the game have been monstrous and evil, using descriptions that are painfully reminiscent of how real-world groups have been and continue to be denigrated. We understand the urgency of changing how we work to better ensure a more inclusive game.

Effective immediately, we will remove the offensive content about Hadozee in our digital versions - and these will no longer be included in future reprints of the book. Our priority is to make things right when we make mistakes. In addition, we’ve initiated a thorough internal review of the situation and will take the necessary actions as a result of that review.

We are eternally grateful for the ongoing dialog with the D&D community, and we look forward to introducing new, engaging and inclusive content to D&D for generations to come. D&D teaches that diversity is strength, for only a diverse group of adventurers can overcome the many challenges a D&D story presents. In that spirit, we are committed to making D&D as welcome and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

    August 5th, 2022

    Hi all!

We've made some changes to the Sources section of our desktop site navigation (affectionately referred to as Mega Menu).

Since it's release in 2019, it had become quite expansive with each new book we added and was already unusable on some of our more popular laptop screen sizes. We've even had to avoid adding some of our recent digital releases as there just wasn't any room.

To solve this problem, we've removed our least popular books. However, we've made it easier (and more obvious) to get to our Sources page which will always have every book:

    Mega Menu

Once you're on the Sources page, you can filter to find exactly what you're looking for:

We know that this change means an extra step to get to some of our content, but we've put this off for far too long. The mobile menu will be getting updated in the new couple of weeks with similar changes as we prefer to keep them in parity.

While this alleviates the immediate problems, we do not consider it a long-term solution. We will continue exploring ways to make navigating our site easier and hope to give y'all the ability to personalize that experience in the future. For now, this change will allow us to make sure we can always keep our latest content where it's easiest to find - so keep an eye out for New! labels which will be presented in yellow text.

That's it for now! Have a wonderful day and may your dice be kind!

This release brings the requested download and update all functionality to Android users as well as a number of improvements and bug fixes. See below for changes per platform.

    Android:

    • New bottom bar and currency icons
    • Listings contain the name of the book that they come from
    • You can now enable the setting in the app which prevents the screen from auto-locking when viewing the character sheet
    • Fixed a bug with certain homebrew descriptions not being shown completely

    Compendium Quality of Life Updates!

    July 15th, 2022

    Hey everyone!

I'm beyond excited to tell everyone all about a number of improvements that we've brought to the Compendium over the last few weeks. Without further ado, let's get into it!

    Sidebar Improvements & Fixes!

A change that has certainly been long overdue in my opinion - we've finally given the compendium sidebar some much needed love! Here are some of the key improvements we've made:

    • The sidebar now has a scrollbar (and is scrollable) to help accommodate pages that have a large number of entries. This means that regardless of your screen resolution, you'll always be able to see all the entries without it being cut off.
    • The sidebar now has a darker background to indicate when entries are part of a larger section (for example rooms in a dungeon).
    • The sidebar now accurately tracks your position on the page and bolds the corresponding location.
    • The sidebar will no longer get cut off by the footer of a page.

Here's an example of some of these improvements in action:

    Against the Giants

In the coming weeks and months, we will be making more strides toward consolidating many of the split chapters and better improving the experience of the compendium pages (both old and new) so that there aren't quite as many splits like in the .gif above.

    Book Refreshes!

A few weeks ago, we updated two more of our older books to meet our current standards of style, accessibility, and better usability; Princes of the Apocolypse and Lost Mine of Phandelver. Here's a quick look at what we've done:

    1. Making sure that the books are as easy to navigate as possible. This meant that we made sure to add hyperlinks whenever possible and made sure that it brought you to the exact place you would expect - whether that meant a specific section of the page you're on or to a specific room in another chapter.
    2. Better accessibility. Along with our current standards, we ensured that any and all image subtitles were placed on the page as text instead. We've also begun using more tools to help us with providing more context to screen reader users (using hidden text that's still picked up by screen readers) in order to provide greater clarity (such as with multiple links) We will continue to iterate and improve in this regard.
    3. Better theming. We've also given this book a visual upgrade in various respects. Not only does it more closely match the book's styles and colors more closely - but with Princes of the Apocolypse I was able to implement something I've always wanted to do for this book - specially styled statblocks! Here's a sneak peek of what I mean:

The Eternal Flame Priest finally lives up to his name
    4. General improvements. Consistent with all of our other refreshes - we've also increased the amount of tooltips, increased the quality of the images, and made many other improvements that should make it a lot easier to use!

Lost Mine of Phandelver - available at no cost to D&D Beyond users!

    Other Improvements

Here are a few other improvements we've also made to make your experience better:

    • Changed the font size of the various headers to be more consistent and not as weirdly sized.
    • Using more consistent and better semantic HTML (such as table captions and ensuring that we don't skip header levels).
    • Fixed some minor issues with statblock formatting and made other improvements like darkening the color of tooltips within a statblock to make them easier to read.
    • Added hover/focus state to all links in the compendium (when focused/hovered over, the link will have an underline) as well as states for some of the other interactive elements (like the "back to the top" button in the bottom right).
    • Improvements to the Table of Contents for our books to be more useful, easier to use, and provide better accessibility. This updated style will be rolled out to more books over the next several months and we will continue to iterate on the design.

    Darkvision Fix

    February 14th, 2022

Darkvision unintentionally stacking or stacking incorrectly is now fixed.

We have added two modifiers to make the whole system work.

    1. Setting darkvision to a specific amount and take the higher value if the darkvision is multi sourced.
    2. Grant a bonus to existing darkvision making the bonuses cumulative.

    Example 1

Creating an Elf character, that is a gloomstalker and then equipping the character with goggles of night.

    • Base darkvision of 60 ft from Elf.
    • Gloomstalker feature adds 30 ft, increasing it to 90 ft.
    • Goggles of Night add 60 ft, increasing to 150 ft. FIXED. (Now cumulative and no longer taking the largest bonus of the two resulting in 120ft)

    Example 2

Creating a Human character, that is a gloomstalker and then equipping the character with goggles of night.

    Expected behaviour:

    • No base darkvision.
    • Gloomstalker feature grants darkvision of 60 ft.
    • Goggles add 60 ft, increasing to 120 ft. FIXED (Now cumulative and no longer taking the largest bonus of the two resulting in 90ft)

Cointainers are now available in your inventory!!!

    February 10th, 2022

    Containers now can hold coins!

This is currently now available to everyone.

If you navigate to your coins in the upper right of your inventory and click open the side bar you will now see a settings cog right of the Manage Coin title. If you click into the settings cog there is now a selection to 'PUT COINS IN CONTAINERS' (Track individual coin totals for different containers in your inventory.) Turning this on will now 'afford' you the ability to place coinage into any inventory item that is a container.

    • Manage Inventory > Coin Count
    • Manage Coin (sidebar) > Settings Cog > Put Coins in Containers > Select ON

This is manual management only, so if you want to spread your wealth around, you will have to divvy up you coin to your chosen containers and then subtract it from where you got it.

    Tax Law Compliance

    February 10th, 2022

In order to ensure the company's compliance with applicable tax laws, we are introducing (on a go-forward basis) a sales tax charge on subscription auto-renewal transactions. This change will impact subscribers who have subscribed before December 4th, 2019, and have not been charged sales tax on a regular basis (post-December 4, 2019 subscribers are already charged for sales taxes). The sales tax amount will be calculated based on the provided state and country of residence. These sales tax charges will be added to all recurring transactions. No charges will be applied retroactively.

Roll from monster stat blocks in the Combat Tracker

    February 8th, 2022

Roll from a Monster Stat-block on the Combat Tracker

    Hello,

Thank you to everyone who has responded and given us feedback around the Encounter Beta. It's been really great to see everyone enjoying the updates!

As feedback, one thing came up a LOT and that was the ability to roll from the monster stat blocks on the Combat Tracker. For those that rolled high on your history check, you know that about a year ago we released rollable monster stat blocks on the combat tracker to subscribers only.

As of this morning, we've pushed that out to free users as well so now everyone can roll from monster stat blocks in the Combat Tracker!

    Twitch Extension Status

    February 2nd, 2022

    Hey adventurers!

The time has come to bid a fond farewell to the current iteration of the D&D Beyond Twitch Extension. While the tool has had a good ride since its launch in October of 2018, it's now time for us to look ahead and consider even better ways to serve you, the creators in our community. Here are a few brief details regarding the sunsetting of the current extension:

Why did the extension stop working?

Twitch recently changed some internal policies, and our extension, which we hadn't updated, was deactivated by the platform. As content creators' needs have changed, as D&D's rules have changed, and as our tools and services have changed, our original Twitch extension wasn't meeting our standards for quality, nor did it represent what today's D&D Beyond toolset can do. Rather than putting bandages on top of bandages to maintain the current extension, we decided to allow the extension to retire.

    Will the extension come back?

Short answer: YES! While we wish our timing had better aligned with Twitch's changes, instead of developing a new version of the Twitch extension, we've put our sights on a new set of tools to support creators who want to use D&D Beyond in their game streams and content.

Thank you for using the Twitch extension these past few years, and we are grateful for your patience as we chart a new course for game streams and content tools. We will keep the community posted on major milestones as the work progresses.

    Death Saving Throws

    Jan 20, 2022

    Hello adventurers,

We're excited to announce that a new addition has been made to the combat tracker: Death saving throws! DMs using the combat tracker will not have to stare at a big red 0 while keeping track of how close to a TPK they are!

When a player changes their HP to 0, an empty set of death saving throws will appear where the HP once was. With each successful roll, a green circle will be filled in and with each failure, a red. Once the characters receive some sort of healing and regain their hit points, the death saving throws will disappear and the current hit points will be visible again.

Death saving throws are now visible in the combat tracker!

    Mobile app v2.06

    January 18th, 2022

The necessity to download the entire book in order to update it required time and bandwidth. We changed the entire mechanism of updating books to make them smaller and easier to prepare.

You can now expect updates to books which are going to take just a few megabytes to download. In the upcoming weeks we are going to be releasing updates to many books to provide the latest versions of the content.

But we did not forget about character sheets. You can now track charges directly in the app.

Stay tuned for more updates soon!
