I'm about to embark on a campaign and will be playing an Artificer. My DM was cool enough to let us start with a magic item. I chose a +1 All-Purpose Tool, naturally. So after realizing I can now Eldritch Blaaast! as an Artificer, I was reading through Xanathar's Guide regarding all the extra bits you get when you are proficient in an artisan's tool. So I'm wondering how exactly that works with the All-Purpose Tool. Say my party is looking for a secret door... I can just change my All-Purpose Tool to Potter's Tool, gain that proficiency, then have an easier time spotting the secret door? Then in the next room, say we find a potions lab. I can then switch to Alchemist's Supplies, gain that proficiency, and help identify what potions are being made?
Is that RAW or am I potentially abusing the game in my interpretation?
I'm not sure how potter's tools can help find a secret door but yes by RAW you can keep changing your All-Purpose Tool into the appropriate tool and use it as if you are proficient. As an added bonus from 6th level you make those checks with double your proficiency bonus.

D'oh! I meant to say Mason's Tools.
