how much do you think handmade adventure boards would cost? or alternatively how much would a 3d printer cost? I just want the maps & battle areas to last a while. thoughts?
I just spent the last month or so crafting some "play sets" based on maps I have created for different places in my campaigns I have setup. I mostly started with Cardboard, got into some foam stuff, lots of paint and glue. I have a friend with a 3d printer but often enough it was just easier to craft what I wanted from foam and cardboard. I used blackmagiccraft, dmscraft, and a number of other youtube resources to get started and get ideas but basically my process was this:
Draw the map of the place the players would be exploring or dealing with. In this case a viking fort.
Translate the map to measurements on the material for construction and cut. Cardboard for me, I eventually reinforced with some foam.
Base paint most of the construction for protection and glue things together where they make sense. In my case it's multiple floor, so having the walls come away with the floor of the next level worked.
Paint up the details of the floors and walls the players will see during play, focusing on immediately usable terrain objects first. In my case the first floor has stone floor and wide generic floor plan making it great for representing other places, painting a cobblestone pattern on it made a great place to play out sessions not in the fort.
Make a list of effects and scatter items that the locale is supposed to have and either craft or buy them, then paint them up.
All in all the results have been great, the players really notice the increased level of immersion and the play sets are pretty interchangeable with reuse being one of my goals in crafting them. Because they are created from cardboard that I spray painted (the base structure) and some foam that I mod podged with paint, they are hard and plastic like in effect. They won't last forever but they were very cheap to make and will be replaced by new pieces before they wear out or break.
