Be it my bard's natural Dexterity proficiency for saving throws, or a bunch of profs. for weapons I won't be using, is there a way with either magic items or something, or can you add it to the site, so that we can remove and/or edit proficiencies? Best I can do is use magic items to add proficiencies, but I can't find a way to taketh away. PLEASE HELP!
Thanks for the answer. I just wish there was an option in making a magic item to select "Remove" then the next drop down is a list of all the proficiencies. I mean we can add all the proficiencies we want, but not remove them.
Or even add another box next to "Fixed Value" called something like "Corresponding Value" and then a little drop down menu of math symbols so I could do it that way:
FIXED VALUE RELATIONSHIP CORRESPONDING VALUE -1 x Proficiency Bonus
There's no mechanic in the rules for something that would remove a proficiency. If there was then this would probably be customizable in various places but otherwise it is probably not worth that developer effort. Think about how it would interact with other items that add those proficiencies, or expertise, and so on...
Hello! Just wanted to follow up on this question in case the recently added ability to homebrew subclasses has made it so that proficiencies can now be removed and/or added. Thanks!
I'd actually really like to get rid of my medium armor, heavy armor, shields, and martial weapons proficiencies because I won't need them as a purely dex based light armor wearing fighter (I'm playing the CR Gunslinger) in addition to the fact that my character has never worn any type of non-light armor or picked up any kind of martial before. My DM said I could get rid of them in exchange for some choice tool proficiencies, but I can't actually get rid of them on my sheet and it's annoying.
I was thinking about this for my feral child character. She's an Elf Rogue so she has the languages Elvish Common and Thieves' Cant but she's a feral child so she actually doesn't know any language and I would like to be able to remove them.
The best I've been able to do is add those languages onto the sheet with the source notes "(Incapable)" so when you hover over them it shows that she can't use them but it would be better if they could be removed.
I want to support this request. There are a myriad of story-driven reasons for proficiencies to be removed / swapped out even if they are based on race/class and not added later.
Similar to this - for homebrewing reasons, I would like to be able to replace certain proficiencies that a race would usually get (in this case, the Dwarf's Weapon Training) for a different set of proficiencies, unfortunately it doesn't look like this is currently possible.
As am application developer myself, I get the possible technical issues of removing them - i.e. would it break the other references in the programmed rules etc.
HOWEVER - it sounds like most people would be happy if we could just HIDE them in the character sheet.
Then it is just a simple display issue - and not some really difficult task of messing with the structure of some many other data dependencies.
Your players CAN manually do this by clicking on the proficiency, clicking the "Customize" option, and choosing the relevant Proficiency level. It's not automatic by the weapon\magic item\etc but it might get the job done for practical purposes until and unless the devs add that homebrewing in
I mean I get that proficiencies are "core class option" or whatever, but this is still idiotic and I don't get why DNDB is so reluctant to make characters more customizable. If I'm a DM making an NPC or a player making a PC and my DM says that my Swashbuckler rogue can trade proficiency with thieves' tools for shields*, I don't see why DNDB would say "Oh we totally have a way for you to add shields, but no, you must keep thieves' tools." That just seems dumb.
*and btw, it'd be cool if someone at WotC would look up what the word swashbuckler means. Here's a hint: part of it is "buckler"
I have new players in my game that simply didn't understand how proficiencies work and added them while clicking around their sheet, assuming they could be removed later. Now they are stuck there forever. We really need an option for removing these!

Any custom proficiencies added manually on the character sheet by clicking on the proficiencies or skills boxes can absolutely be removed later. It's the base features we're talking about here.
Ahh okay. Thanks for clarifying. I see now that these proficiencies were not added by the player but were granted via their race (High elf wizard). My bad, as I was trying to figure out how an elf wizard had proficiency with a longsword and my player told me they had added it themself. This must have just been some confusion on their part and I forgot High Elves had training with Longswords.

Proficiencies are a core part of the base class, so no, it is not possible to remove them.

Just a few thoughts. I love this site!

Would ease things greatly =).

I support this request for all the reasons mentioned above.

Well. Now that Tasha's Cauldron of Everything is out, can we remove or hide proficiencies in any homebrew way?
