With the new versions of the Artificer and new versions of the subclasses, plus some new ones, it is time to find out which subclass is most popular. Vote for your new favorite and tell us why. Do you still love your old favorite or has a new subclass caught your eye? Did your favorite get nerfed or buffed but in the wrong way? Hoping the reanimator leaves UA? Let us know below.
I've put together a cartographer that I'm kind of excited about trying. Giving it the Sage background gives it some nice extra magic options. I think this is going to be challenging to play in that it is going to use a lot of situational strategy but be a valuable buff to the party which is exactly what I like about it. Every turn will be different for this character.
I also like that the Artillerist can change the cannon action on each turn, which I think makes it a lot more flexible and fun. But I don't know enough yet to vote!
Current favorite is Battle Smith. The others have speciality (artillerist - ranged attack, alchemist - support with potions, etc.), but battle smith seems the most well rounded from my individual personal opinion.
My son is playing a Battle Smith and as I have thought through and simulated higher levels I do like the action economy inherent in having 3x companions - he has a Familiar (his DM let him choose the Clockwork Observer since it is a CR-0), Steel Defender, and Homunculus Servant. I think the Battle Smith definitely benefits from magic item crafting to get the most out of the companions. I think ultimately the amount of magic item crafting you will be able to do (and the type you want to make) is a big factor in empowering different builds.
I spent more time getting to know the new subclasses and I think the Maveric is really over-powered since you can get spells like Spirit Guardians and load it on your Spell Storing Item. Basically getting any Wizard, Cleric, or Artificer spells makes it easier to break the game (or stretch it really far). Also they get 50% time discount on ANY magic item crafting.
I am curious about the reanimator - I like the lightning interactions with the Reanimated Construct. I was disappointed when I realized it was not possible to load Animate Dead on the Spell Storing Item (I was excited to make an army of 30-40x Skeletons). I also did not see if there is a time discount for manufacturing any type of magic item.

Alchemist: Print potions like a 3D printer
Armorer: Get in close, and get creative
Artillerist: Free Bonus action Firebolt and/or Burning Hands and/or False Life
Battlesmith: Upgrade your action economy
Cartographers: Quickie Koala
Current favorite is the artillerist, but I like all of them. Tempted to try out cartographer in my next campaign.
