Does anyone else find it interesting how much more, little by little, 5E is starting to look more like 4E?
Yeah I am just waiting for features to become "per encounter" instead of "per short rest"
Serious question for you, Optimus. And I apologize to the original poster for derailing this thread.
Do the tables you play at allow a short rest after every combat encounter? If so, how many combat encounters are you seeing between long rests? Two? Eight?

No need to apologize, I am learning more with you guys just go whatever directions with the thread lol. My books just showed up last night so I will be reading through them and possibly coming back with more direct and specified questions lol
Eh, I don't think you need to pick a primary weapon between bow and sword to be an effective ranger. Focusing on maximizing your dexterity, using the spell Hunter's Mark to boost damage, and using the right weapon for the situation will lead to a consistently useful and effective character. Rangers make excellent switch-hitters.
I would definitely spend a good amount of time reading over the beastmaster ranger, both PHB and Tasha's. Understanding if that is how you want to build your pet is the first big hurdle to figuring out what subclass is going to work best for you. Maybe leaning on Summon Beast instead is exactly what you want, or maybe you want something more permanent.

Beastmaster probably works best for a switch hitter build too as your attack is augmented by the creatures attacks which do not rely on your ability scores.

From what I have been reading so far in the PHB and Tasha’s I’m leaning more towards a Beast Master with a primal companion as it is permanent but stronger/more durable from what I grasped so far
I think you will be happy with Tasha's primal companion. Getting the most out of the PHB companion takes some more advanced tactics which I don't think you should be bothering yourself with just yet being so new to everything.
I wouldn't worry about multiclassing. You can be a roguish, stealthy type without levels in the namesake class. Beast Master is a subclass that highly incentivizes staying single class, and it's also just easier to deal with.

Full agree. Tasha's with deft explorer in stealth and a primal beast will make the character you want to play.

I have been reading through PHB, XGtE, and TCoE. I am definitely going to run Beast Master with a primal companion. Can I run beast master up to lvl 15 and then take 3 levels of Gloom stalker for the umbral sight, dread ambusher, and disguise self? or can i not snag spells from 2 archetypes although theyre both a ranger class?
Another question. If i can level 2 different archetypes do both of those still count towards the level for ranger overall? As in BM level 15 gets share spells, but is that still technically ranger levels so i would still gain access to vanish, hide in plain sight, etc?
I would focus on archery with duel wielding as a back up. My main companion would be a Beast of Land to match better with my backstory.
I would also definitely snag deft explorer instead of natural explorer. I would also like a few feats but not sure if it would be possible to snag them all or not.
Feats: Shadow touched, fey touched, sharpshooter, duel wielder, elven accuracy, and wood elf magic (pass without trace)
To this day, there is no way you can choose two different archetypes of the same class. After 15th-level, you might want to look to other classes that give you similar-ish benefits.
You don't really need Wood Elf Magic for Pass Without Trace. That spell is already on the Ranger list, so you can just take it naturally at 5th-level. The other feats are all really good. You probably can't afford them all without giving up some level of ASIs tho. Keep in mind you're gonna need high Dex for your attacks and high Wis for your pet's attacks. The half-feats (Elven Accuracy, and Fey/Shadow Touched) help to somewhat mitigate this, but it's still something to think about.

so if i removed the wood elf magic and shadow touched would that help? giving me an extra 4 ASI points
any advice on what level 3 bonuses would help me?
i was looking at either mastermind for intrigue and tactics or scout for the reaction ability

2 per day usually with 1-2 bigger fights between.
2 short rests between long rests? Ok. So pretty straightforward.
Honestly, I'm okay with that. 4E was far from perfect, but it had a lot of good ideas that just needed refinement.
