It does also say “Also, remember that the swarm's appearance is yours to customize, and don't feel confined to a single appearance. Perhaps the spirits' look changes with the ranger's mood or with the seasons. You decide!” In Tasha’s so it’s entirely possible that you could decide to have them become invisible in public to not frighten people and then have them all of a sudden show up would have some good shock value
My character died and I have created a level 17 swarmkeeper ranger human, who fights with a spear. It is a home brew world, like eberron. I need a hilarious or badass ideas for my swarm. Hit me with your best ideas.
Shark-like armadillos, or ardvarks. Something no one would ever expect.
Cyrene, might check the date of the initial post - it’s from 3 years ago. I think it’s a bit late now.
Shatter31, here is the relevant section from Tasha:
IT’S YOUR SWARM
A Swarmkeeper’s swarm and spells are reflections of the character’s bond with nature spirits. Take the opportunity to describe the swarm and the ranger’s magic in play. For example, when your ranger casts gaseous form, they might appear to melt into the swarm, instead of a cloud of mist, or the arcane eye spell could create an extension of your swarm that spies for you. Such descriptions don’t change the effects of spells, but they are an exciting opportunity to explore your character’s narrative through their class abilities. For more guidance on customizing spells, see the “Personalizing Spells” section in chapter 3.
The swarm are supposed to be nature spirits not objects so your DM may have problems with a swarm of daggers. On the other hand there is nothing saying that a swarm of, say hornets-, couldn’t be flying around creating dagger shaped formations with the hornets reversing direction in the formation for a joint sting for the extra damage. The last line is important too - nothing says your swarm has to be the same thing all the time. It could be butterflies when your happy, hornets when your angry, flies when your dad, etc so have fun with your swarm.
Also, remember that the swarm’s appearance is yours to customize, and don’t feel confined to a single appearance. Perhaps the spirits’ look changes with the ranger’s mood or with the seasons. You decide!
I have a swarm keeper who has a swarm of bees and there dressed like a medieval bee keeper (there really cool looking cause they give off plague doctor vibes) or you could do a plague doctor with a swarm of rats.

That's a great point!
I've had three concepts for swarmkeepers since the subclass came out:
I am thinking about making a Rogue/Swarmkeeper, with a swarm of flying daggers, this idea has plagued me for years, but I don't know if its allowed...

Wisea$$ DM and Player since 1979.
Your swarm is a bunch of ferrets. They congregate into a massive pile under you to lift you up into the air. Now you are "flying".
