I am playing a Fierna Tiefling Trickster Cleric and I am fairly new still to 5E, not having played this race or class before I am hoping for some advice. My group just hit level 4 and its time to modify abilities or take feats. Here is what I am sitting at after racial bonuses.
STR 12 Dex 11 Con 15 Int 12 Wis 18 Cha 16
After a cursory google search, it seems like the standard approach would be to raise the Wis to 20 to max out my Spell attack and DC. HOWEVER, at level 2 and 3 I rolled for HP and they were both awful. At level 3 I had a measly 19 HP and my AC is a decent 16. I was thinking to round up my odd Dex and Con to better my AC and HP as my Wis is a respectable 18 already. As for player style, I've been playing mainly as a midrange attacker reserving a few spell slots for healing. The DM of course likes to take advantage of the fact that we have one melee character in the party and often has us fighting baddies in close quarters. I love it, no risk no reward, but I think I need to up my survival chances.
But are there any good feats that could help me instead of the ability modification I'm thinking of? I've got work in 9 hours, so I am going to take a long rest, but I'd greatly appreciate any tips.
What Xalthu was referring to is when you cast a spell with a semantic but not a material component RAW you must have a free hand (you can not use your shield hand).
Another option is resiliant con, you will get the extra hp but not the extra ac, but like if you take warcaster you will be much better at maintaining concentration on spells.
Yes, jegpeg was more clear. If the spell is V,S you need a free hand. So sacred flame, toll the dead, cure wounds, spiritual weapon, dispel magic. There’s quite a few common spell that fall into that category.
Its also one of the strangest rules since VS you need a free hand, but VSM you do not. Lots of people more or less ignore it.

Good evening all,

How strictly do you follow component rules? If you worry about them consider warcaster.
If not that boost to dex and con is a good call. It’s not flashy, but you’ll use it in pretty much every fight.
We keep to the component rules moderately well. Mainly use my holy symbol though.
Thanks!
