So i see a lot of builds suggesting to multiclass your caster into a tempest cleric to get the amazing channel divinity. And it's true, it's great.
But right now, i'm playing a lvl17 tempest cleric and loving it, and i wondering if there's any combo worth forsaking the automatic Divine intervention, a last ASI and a third Channel Divinity.
The only one I can think of is Storm Sorcerer to get the metamagic option to change my spell's damage, but a lot of the features seem like they would be a repeat of what I can already do.
(Also I have War Caster so that added Con Save isn't that useful)
Any good combos? And for curiosity purposes, they don't have to be a 17/3 split, I would also love to see other suggestions of tempest clerics multiclassing into something else with other splits, as long as it stays the main class.
Not sure if it is better than single class (what your DM allows for DI can make a huge difference) but I think the best MC option is fighter.
1 Level: A fighting syle is nice Second wind's healing is pretty small by this level but better than nothing between combats or if you have nothing to use do with your bonus action
2 levels: Action Surge is what you are really after casting 2 levelled spells on your turn is awesome
3 levels: If you have warcaster I think the best option here is echo knight while on your turn you can only take the attack action with the echo, that doesn't apply to op attacks have your echo move up to the bad guy and if he tries to move away cast harm. If you don't have warcaster stil an option for the manouverability, depending on how you play battlemaster may also be an option or you could just stick with a 2 level dip.
I would say sorcerer of any kind is great for a tempest cleric especially at higher levels, even the much maligned storm sorcerer, and then of course there's metamagic. There's lots of flexibility and effectiveness to be gained with metamagic, via a dip or the metamagic adept feat for a tempest cleric, and adding on 2-3 levels of sorcerer can help boost your metamagic resources and really crank up the tempest resilience, versatility, and power.
If you dip even 1 level into sorcerer you gain access to shield and absorb elements which are super effective defensively and give you something to do with your reaction aside from the very poorly scaling wrath of the storm. There are some nice flavor cantrips and booming blade is always a welcome addition if you ever need to make a weapon attack. In the end, each sorcerer sub class has some nice features at 1st level so pick one you like.
But for thematic reasons, and because I think tempestuous magic is severely underrated, I took a 1 level dip into storm on my 12th level tempest and it's been incredibly effective, especially with regard to my defenses and mobility. But the other reason to consider a dip is to bolster metamagic. I find the tempest repertoire of spells drops off after 9th level where you gain destructive wave (a rare spell with an excellent ally friendly massive aoe you can partially max) to your domain spell list. Now you can certainly upcast call lightning, a super efficient and long range blasting spell, throughout your career, for the max lightning damage in a small aoe with thunderbolt to push, but after 9th there's really nothing else. Your blasting power and flexibility drops off especially given the nature of the tempest domain. You're still a cleric with high level spells but your tempest kit is not going to get any better than upcasting allows.
I took the metamagic adept feat at 12th because my blasting spells were beginning to peter out and felt a bit stale. Plus with the transmute spell metamagic now I can use thunderbolt strike with any elemental spell and fire storm now becomes a ridiculous monster aoe you can max. The downside is that the feat only grants you 2 sorcery points which only reset on a long rest, so very limited but incredibly useful. But with a 2 level dip into sorcerer you gain Font of Magic which grants you 2 sorcery points (1 per sorcerer level) which can now be refreshed with spell slots extending the usefulness of the metamagic feat, throughout the day, as long as you have spell slots to convert ofc.
I just find the ability to adapt your spells and actually use thunderbolt strike on thunder wave, shatter, destructive wave, and fire storm a huge addition to your battlefield control and blasting potential, coupled with the defensive spells and mobility granted by storm sorcerer to be super useful and very fun. At higher levels I feel like it has made my tempest more versatile, resilient and powerful and I've been super happy with the dip and the addition of metamagic to my bag of tricks.

Go with Genie Warlock, Pact of the Chain. Pair that with Investment of the Chain Master. You just gained an absolutely supreme amount of utility.
Other notable utility invocations (of course you can only have 2 total):
- Repelling Blast, Grasp of Hadar, Devil's Sight, Gift of the Ever-Living Ones, Mask of Many Faces, Misty Visions, Voice of the Chain Master (maybe)
Go for the 3rd channel divinity at level 18. Call lightning for max damage 3 rounds in a row. It will be sooooo worth it.
