I'm making a dwarf tempest cleric, grumpy dwarf that loves to fight and drink ale, giving him brewers supply proficiency with his racial traits.
Should I go with clan crafter or Acolyte for my background? Clan crafter seems interesting just don't know how to use it to its advantage and role play it
Go with whichever one you’re going to enjoy the most.
In the case of clan crafter, I’m going to guess you’re not sure about ways to use the artisans tools. The first thing I think of is during downtime, you can use it to make money. Beyond that, how you can use is it going to depend on your creativity. The best thing is to work with your DM and ask what kinds of uses there might be. Maybe your DM allows you to better tell if a piece of metalwork art or stone carving (or whichever kind of artisan you choose to be) is a forgery, or how valuable it is, or lets you make a forgery. The stout folk ability means you get to act like a celebrity when you visit a dwarf settlement, and always have a place to stay for free there. Again, work with your DM, if you don’t go to any dwarf settlements, it might not be very useful.
You also have the option of creating your own custom background.
Unlike as with classes, DMs are usually willing to be more flexible with backgrounds because they are easy to balance, and an invested player is a better player.
Cranky person who loves to fight and drink ale… this seems a perfect fit for soldier background. This fast tracks him for combat where he uses his godly storm powers for the clan and butt kicking. And who doesn't love appear after a good workout?
