With all of the concern over the OGL and monetization of the D&D that has been spoken about in regards to OneD&D I wanted to chime in on some things that concern me.
Currently I am a subscriber here at DNDBeyond. The biggest feature is sharing with my gaming group content. This means that even if my friends or students in my afterschool program cannot afford books they can read them.
Since Covid we have also moved partially online and that prompted a Roll20 subscription as well. It has features that assisted when we were fully online as well as runs the TV battle map when we are in person.
One thing I don't like about my current situation is that if I want assets on Roll20 I have to create them myself a process that is hours of searching, laying out, drawing dynamic lighting lines, finding tokens and so on. If I don't want to spend hours doing this I need purchase content on Roll20 that I already have access to on DnDBeyond (yes even with the Beyond20 Chrome extension).
If I had discovered Roll20 first that would be they place that I purchase more content not because its better than DnDBeyond but because I don't want to buy it twice.
Given this situation I was thrilled to hear that Wizards was developing its own VTT. My assumption at the time that it would work with DnDBeyond and that content I had access to there would be content I had access to on the VTT. Now I did not expect the upgrade in features to be free. But I don't want to have a separate subscription, have to manage a separate profile for myself and all my students, and so on.
So for this consumer. I would really want whatever is done to be a single sign in entry that allows for both content, character building and the VTT. If you really want to beat your competition with a better product please also take some steps with your VTT and content curation for DMs to create Campaign Journals.
