Linking ability scores to backgrounds was the worst move WotC has ever done in D&D, even after 4th ed. Now, every character is pigeon holed into one or two backgrounds, making every party to be so one note and boring as to ruin any real long term RP.
I am not not in favor of backgrounds locking specific Origin feats which compounds the issue. If I want to play a decent Warlock who grew up a Farmer (background) and found a magical stone that shot form the start and gave them magical insight (Magic Initiate - Wizard) which led them to pursue occult magics (Warlock class)). SOOooooo I am homebrewing all the backgrounds keeping the ribbon ability from 2014, adding an option for 2 origin feats (trying to create some options). And due to the way homebrew backgrounds work you can choose any agility scores now.
But it is a lot more work than just using the canned options
