Does anyone else think this isn't a great idea? For one thing, there's two-gazillion other things I'd much rather have done and fixed waaaaaaaaaaay before homebrew base classes. Anything that takes resources away from those things is a loss, IMO. For another thing, once it's done, it's going to require a huge amount of support because, let's face it, people can't even get a lot of the very most basic things about the current system right and imagine how much stuff is going to break when they bring the complexity of base class interaction with the rest of the system into the mix. I'm really not looking forward to it, to be honest.
Adam Bradford said a couple times that he personally decided to add it to the roadmap due to user feedback.
Obviously enough of the community wanted it that Adam thought it was worth the resources. Besides, they assign teams to these things-- They have already said that there will be homebrew revamps coming up, so I imagine the same team on that would be doing the other bit of homebrew. That doesn't pull away from the DM features they're working on, further functionality of the mobile version, etc.
It may not be something you want, but it is something others want. I don't care about the mobile version, because I host all of the groups I play with/DM for in my own game room, so I have reliable wi-fi and I like the character sheet view on my tablet. But it doesn't bother me that resources are going towards the mobile app. That's going to be great for a lot of people that aren't me or my group. Nothing wrong with that.

Adding on to this, it may not be something that you use now, but could be something that you could use later in the future. It's always nice to have more features than what you need. This gives you the option to use them (if needed), but doesn't require you to use them. Everyone's campaign needs will be slightly different.
