I play 5e pretty loosey-goosey, since that's how I interpret the system itself, and my table prioritize roleplaying, story and improvisational fun. And for me and my players, 100 % RAW and strict adherence to the rules isn't a goal in itself.
There are games and systems that give much less leeway and require RAW to work, but that ain't 5e :-)
RAW Matters in a few cases but can be fudged in most cases...
Consistency in the rules is the key...if you rule of cool something and allow it once just call it out as such so that players know its an exception and not the new standard.
Talk with your players and engage with them and you should be golden.
