I love thrown weapons. However, keep in mind once you throw your weapon it is thrown and now your doing something else.
the rules don't seem to really accommodate for things like throwing knives. You can only carry so many throwable weapons.
Kind of a drawback on the rules. I think of a weapon thrower as Danny Trejo's character in the movie Desperado. He had like a dozen or more throwing knives on his body. small and could be canceled in the hand. And if someone is throwing little throwing knives I would give them at least 2 per round, with disadvantage for the first level or 2
I think monk is the best option for thrown weapons. As a monk weapon, you can improve the damage dice of darts as you level up. Kensei monks can use their bonus action to give it an extra 1d4 damage without using ki, plus one attack can get an extra MA die roll. Staying at range is actually really nice as a monk bc of deflect missile, plus if you get run up on, you're still a monk and they can still catch these hands. A 2 level dip into ranger gives you hunters mark and the fighting style, plus 1 level into fighter can get you the archery style since that also works with darts. It's still not better than other ranged options or anything super meta, but it's at least viable.
Monks are proficient with darts but they are not monk weapons (which are simple melee weapons and shortswords only). Dedicated weapon only helps you with one weapon (not the weapon type) so only works on one dart. Kensei, however, can take it as one of their Kensei weapons and would work with all the darts you can carry. To make the best use of it you would need both the archery and thrown weapon fighting styles (which cannot without multiclassing) as well as sharpshooter.
Check off homebrew during character creation and equipment selection- there are both a dagger and hand axe of returning. Albert +2 but if I could create them you can certainly create a +1 version

I got a DM to let me carry a lot of Shuriken
there are a few fighting styles that the game fell short on.
We need a better rule for subduing an opponent without killing them.
The same for knocking people unconscious.
Thrown weapons need some work.
