I introduced 'Lodestone Arrows' - a simple magic item that does 1 point of damage and dispels any magical flight. I've never had to use them =)
That's relatively powerful. Because if a Wizard casts flight - there should at least be some form of Dispel Magic effect that it needs to match or beat some DC - rather than automatically dispelling magical flight. Because that's an easy win to a fight.
Wizard casts flight, goes 80 feet up, hit them with an arrow (because they have crappy armor) - they fall taking 8d6 damage (1d6 per 10 feet).
We have someone in my group who always plays Variant Tiefling Sorcerer (so she gets flight at level 1), and I've never seen it be a problem at all. What issues are people even worried about? I've heard many times that "it negates obstacles" or something, but just never seen it play out that way in action.
What issues do people even think that Flying causes? I just don't get it. Flying doesn't help in combat if you give the enemies ranged attacks (and if they don't have ranged attacks then that flying sorcerer is immune to damage anyways by standing on the ground far away). Flying might help one player easily get past an obstacle, but if you need the entire party to get past it then you're still stuck there needing to solve it as a team. The biggest advantage I've seen flying give is jumping from any height and completely negating fall damage, but there are other ways available at level 1 to avoid fall damage so it isn't really that big a deal.
