I think it's fair to say that distance is a necessary part of D&D combat. Grids are the most efficient and easy means to measure distance. If you don't use grids, you have to use some other tool to measure distance that is likely not as easy or efficient as a grid.
Question: How is counting squares (I assume that is why you say a grid is the most efficient way) "Easier" than using either a tool in person or online that measures 30feeet? Frankly even when my maps do have a grid online, I see my players using a measuring tool because that is easier to them.
My players see the battlemap on a TV screen. They are *not* putting a measuring tape up to the screen, and usually only have only one person controlling what's on that screen rather than everyone logged into it, so no digital rulers. So they can measure with their eyeballs alone, and then tell me where they're moving. "Two squares right and three up".
The Battle Grid is a big beneficial tool for most players, even if it's not strictly necesary like 4E.
Not at all my state more not. The onus on DDB is to provide the option most people want (or a way for those that want it to have it). And DDB provides the option that allows those that want nothing to have it without effort to remove it, while those that want it have to add it. Again better to have a system where someone has to add something than a system where people have to remove something.
I agree that some people want DDB to add the grid option, but again if adding a grid means I have to remove it for my group then I'll be just as annoyed as the group that currently dislikes having no grid option and needs to add it themselves.
However DDB does provide a way to measure on their VTT so they have fulfilled the role of the rules at least.
I don't understand what you're trying to say here. Unticking "snap to grid", "show grid" or whatever is far simpler than adding a grid yourself.
I'm not sure why people have this obsession with "If this feature is added, I will not be able to disable it". If a feature is good for a significant portion of the playerbase, and is easily "toggle-able", then it's a no-loss situation. Either you use it or you don't, but it's clear given how many times this has been asked for, that it's wanted by a significant portion of the site's users.

Because as much as I love this site, they are bad a adding things as togglable until a second outcry happens after people get their feature added. The biggest point I made several times is people will do what requires the least amount of work from them and makes a majority of people happy. A company would rather have a system where those who want to add something have to add it, than design a system that requires opting in or out because that is time and money spent on both those features. Sorry what we see as a simple toggle is never a simple toggle when it comes to computers and code.
However I think my entire point is being missed if people are actually reading my replies. I said if they add it great! But I was merely point out that A) grids are not always the "easier" way to do maps and B) there are pros and cons to both sides. However not everyone feels that grids make it easier and I certainly don't see this a valid reason to add maps. You use projecting a screen as a reason for grids and THAT is a much better argument for screens that simply saying "grids make measuring easier" because as I stated with my own experience, that is not always the case.
It's funny how the statement "Clearly there is a demand for it" When there is also an equal desire for people to just do it themselves. If they add it great, but I am not going to waste time demanding a feature be added when there are also some that would prefer it to not be that way. I won't even get into the fact that I spent more time on owlbear rodeo (great mapping tool but has flaws) lining up grids and things because I wasn't putting them on my own maps, and you know what I ended up doing eventually? Ignoring that whole system and drawing my own grid on the map and not worrying about it since that was an "opt in" system. However, if it was indeed a "simple toggle" I still would have been annoyed having to opt out of it.
Look we don't see eye to eye but I still see certain parts of the wanting grid view point as valid, I have literally said this in almost all my replies.

You're still arguing against a feature on the basis that you have to avoid it. That's the part everyone has an issue with. You're invalidating everyone's wishes because you seem to think you'll be inconvenienced.

And you aren't invalidating my wishes to not not deal with it due to your own current inconveniences?
Frankly I don't beleive am invalidating anyone's concerns, wishes, or wants; simply pointing out my own opinion on the matter. Something I don't beleive I have told you not to do yourself. You seem to ignore my constant "if they add it, great"s that I have been saying. I just don't see the value as you so see that is all. I even called out you wanting grids because you project maps onto a TV as a VALID reason to have this option. But if it get added and it inconveniences me, my concerns are just as justified as your wants are due to your current inconveniences.
Perhaps, since it seems to be a feature that the devs don't think is a priority despite many people asking for it, it could be a toggle that was opt-in. Switching a toggle off or on is about as low a bar to clear as I can imagine.
I think the discussion has run its course. Many would like the feature. It is just an option to use and not everyone has to use it. Perhaps the devs don't want to make the VTT too complicated so it is their choice.
I too would like them to add grids. We mainly use the ruler to check line of sight as many times it doesn't transfer well to the size of the map (not accurate).
