And a level 20 wizard will be facing creatures with legendary saves. In the first round the fighters will do their 87 while the wizard does 70. In the second round he will no longer have a 9th level slot available, and is stuck with an 8th level spell. Etc. etc.
The dame in the classes is so ridiculously skewed.
A fighter with 4 attacks, 3 hits, 2 of which are a crit will do less damage than a caster with a single spell and the target saves.
Completely out of wack, and they wonder why nobody wants to play a standard fighter any longer.
Comparing spell caster damage with a melee fighter is comparing apples and oranges. People have been complaining about Spell casters (specifically Magic Users) since the White Box days. The developers back then added casting time and components to appease the complainers back then. In 2e they limited spell level damage to 10 dice. Back then you also couldn't mutliclass as a human, but non-humans could but they were restricted to a certain amount of levels. Both cut down on min-maxings. I don't expect WoTC to suddenly reduce spell level damage or do anything to increase a fighter's damage, when they can get up to six attacks in one round at level 20.

3 hits and 2 crits with what damage type, modifier etc.?
Single spell of what type? Level?
