Even with the population mobilized to fuel the Dwendalian war effort, the gnomish city of Hupperdook still throws its signature raucous celebrations night after night after night. By day, the workers toil for ten-hour work days, churning out the weapons of war that will be brought to bear against the Kryn Dynasty of Xhorhas on the battlefield. But once the sun goes down, the carousing begins. Even as you approach the mountainside city, you can hear the din of celebration and the crackle and fizz of fireworks. It'll be good to kick back and rest in an inn as opposed to the wilderness for a change – nobody ever said adventuring was easy. But with so much happening in Wildemount these days, there's ample work for adventurers of all stripes. Who knows what opportunities await you underneath those bright lights shining against the dark sky?
Hello! I have been a big Critical Role fan for years and would really like to get a Wildemount PbP going! After much deliberation on which pre-written to start with, I have decided upon the Dwendalian Empire starting quest: Dangerous Designs! I am looking for 5-6 players to join me on this journey. I will be closing recruitment after the 6th slot is filled.
Please read this list of things to consider before you volunteer to join:
1. All levels of D&D/Critical Role experience are welcome. Whether it is your first time playing or your millionth, you have a place in Wildemount! Please be patient with any new players.
2. Play nice with your fellow players and DM. Be respectful. If there is an issue, we settle it as quickly and peacefully as possible.
3. Feel free to start brainstorming character concepts, but do not post your character sheet just yet. Wait until you are recruited to do so, so the party can all share their ideas and collaborate. We will be starting at level one and generate stats using standard array, point buy, or rolling (4d6 drop lowest) here in the recruitment thread once everyone is on board. No UA or homebrew, please. Stick with these resources: Player's Handbook, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Volo's Guide to Monsters, Explorer's Guide to Wildemount, Tasha's Cauldron of Everything (optional features included; run feats from Tasha's by me first). The Blood Hunter class is also available, along with any Critical Role content like the Cobalt Soul Monk, the Matt Mercer gunslinger fighter, Oath of the Open Sea Paladin, etc.
As far as races go, please stick to things that are in the Critical Role setting. Please refer to the Wildemount Guide's notes on player races and locations to guide your character creation. If you do not have access to it, I will share the content with you in a DnD Beyond campaign page. You may use Tasha's customized lineage rules. If you are dying to play a unique species like changeling, shifter, vedalken, or anything like that, talk to me and we can potentially work something out. I highly suggest making a character using the Wildemount Guide's Heroic Chronicle! It will generate all sorts of information for you and further tie your character into the world, as well as give me some potential direction to follow should this game stretch out longer than just the pre-written portion into a larger campaign, which I hope it does!
I am using Roll20 for maps during combat so we can keep clear track of positions in combat. It is free to make an account if you do not have one.
Also no evil alignments please. I find they do not work well in a group dynamic. Anything on the good and neutral spectrum are completely okay.
Adventures tend to start cleaner when everyone already knows each other rather than just 'five strangers join together because the DM said so.' So as part of character creation we will be discussing character connections as a session zero. You do not all have to be best friends with each other (you certainly can be!), but you should at least know one another. This adventure takes place as the characters arrive in the city of Hupperdook in the Dwendalian Empire, but you do not necessarily have to be from the Empire; you do need a reason to be in Hupperdook, however. These can be individual motivations or an entire party motivation.
4. No racism please. Do not make your character hate all [insert race here] because of backstory purposes. Racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism, and any attempts at sexual violence will not be tolerated. You may think this goes without saying, but I have played with some crazy people, folks, and I do not want to do it again. Thankfully as far as PbP goes I have never encountered this, so hopefully it stays that way.
5. PbPs are usually pretty slow burn, so have patience. My own schedule is pretty busy (coming up on my final few months of university), but I do my best to post as often as I can while also not leaving anyone behind. I am in the Pacific timezone (UTC - 08:00). You do not have to be in the same time zone as me to join this. Try to post at least once a day. I tend to post a couple times a day, mostly to facilitate player questions or resolve skill checks and things like that.
6. You do not have to be an expert creative writer, but please do your best to use good grammar and correct spelling in your posts.
7. If you have to drop or take a break, just be honest and let me know. Nothing is worse than getting ghosted. I promise I will understand and harbor no grudges. Real life absolutely takes precedence over DnD.
8. Have fun!
Recruitment is first come, first serve. If you have read all the things to consider and believe you can abide by them, then feel free to apply! Please introduce yourself (just your username is fine, no need to share your real name) and tell us how long you have played D&D and your level of familiarity with Critical Role.
If you have any questions, let me know! I look forward to this adventure!
Well I am old enough that the first time I played D&D was with the red box and then several of the iterations after that. I have been listening to Critical Role since the beginning and am somewhat familiar with the setting but always willing to learn more.
I would also be fine filling the party's need, although, since I currently have an active Rogue and a active Cleric in other PbPs I would rather avoid those classes. If alright with everyone else I would love to make a future Echo Knight or a Wizard.
A few notes about Heroic Chronicle expectations: You can roll all of the dice associated here in the forum or keep them to yourself, but if you roll them yourself privately, I expect you to abide by the honor system and be honest about your results.
If you get any fateful moments from your ally/rival rolls, run them by me. They will require my approval. Some of them are fine, others are a little crazy, like letting you become a lycanthrope.
You can pre-generate certain facets such as your background, home region, and family (i.e. if you really want to play a Sage, be from the Menagerie Coast, or have no family whatsoever, you can just decide that for yourself), but do roll for your allies/rivals' identities, your favorite food, your fateful moments (if any), and your secrets. If a secret does not feel right, you can roll again or choose another. Additionally, you can just roll everything randomly. It is up to you!
For prophecies, I suppose these are up to you. The book suggests that you write down three goals for your prophecies: an immediate goal, a long-term goal, and an end-of-campaign goal. For now, I believe an immediate prophecy goal is all that is necessary. This can be something you roll/choose from the table in this section, or something that you come up with yourself. If you make it up yourself, the prophecy will have two parts: a goal you want to attain, and a complication that will arise once the goal is met - for good or ill.
I'll be sending a campaign link out shortly
As for the structure of this campaign, this first adventure will take us to 3rd level, then from there it is pretty free form. You guys could decide you want to join the war effort and fight against the Dynasty, or maybe defect to Xhorhas, or maybe avoid the war altogether and do something else. We'll just see where the wind takes us!
Actually I would prefer it if you PMed me your Chronicle results and then shared the need to know basic info about your character and their backstory to form connections!
I have interest in the following: protector aasimar barbarian (likely redundant with an echo knight and blood hunter), lotusden halfling ranger, lotusden halfling monk (also redundant?), pallid elf grave cleric, or a tabaxi fathomless warlock.
I have also been notified that you can roll dice in PMs (thank you Sidewinder), so if you would like to do that for your chronicle, go ahead and do that with me!
Alright, based on what everyone else has here, I think I may go with a cleric. Currently vacillating between forge and peace domains, I'll see what the chronicle has in store that might inform a backstory before committing.
