Hi all, I’ve been trying to come up with some combat rules for a siege. I know that it is something that is brought up by DM’s a lot and I’ve never found a system that actually works. I know that the consensus is to let the battle happen and have the players do small rounds of combat or tasks while the war happens around them and that is exactly what I want to do, but I want the dice to still decide who wins the war. So I’ve come up with this system. Let me know what you think.
50 unit points per town level (Village 50, Town 100, City 150)
Walls add 20
Each army rolls 1d100 to add that amount to their unit points.
Attacking army send half of their recourses, effectively leaving the other half to protect their own land.
Divide both armies by 2 to work out the amount of HP
Roll 1d20 for each army per war round (not combat round) and take the number rolled off their enemies HP. Having a war room or tactician can add 1d4 to each roll.
If the players kill a group of the enemies forces, take the total CR off the HP of the enemies side.
After each war round, describe to the players what is happening on the battle field, depending on how the dice roll. Have the attackers pushed forwards or have the defenders pushed them back? Have the attackers fired a catapult and broken a wall or have the defenders got rid of the siege ladders?
