Ok, last night my characters were almost TPK'ed. It started because there were only 3 of the 5 players present and they still wanted to play. They were finishing up the Chapter 3: When Home Burns and beat the Baaz Draconians and Boilerdrak, and then Fewmaster Gholcag showed up with two more Baaz Draconians and his Greatclub totally annihilated the three characters.
Because there were only 3 of the original 5 characters present, I allowed the characters to be stabalized instead of dying when they failed their three death saves. So now, there are three unconscious characters and I am going to have them captured and try to build an escape scenario for them.
I am doing milestone leveling because I do not want to deal with having to keep track of all 5 PC's XP. They will all be level 4 after Ch. 3: When Home Burns because of the two non-available players that made it to Kalaman.
Here is what I am working with:
Captured PC's
1) Galahad the Insufferable - Variant Human Knight of Solamnia (Paladin) 2) Quarion Nightbreeze - High Elf Renegade Mage 3) Thaddeus Goliatha - Human Fighter
Free PC's
1) Quanto - Half-Orc Monk 2) Tolbin Quickfoot - Mage of Hight Sorcery
I first thought of having them prisoners at Wheelwatch Outpost and having them escape from there. The PC's would be one level below (4 instead of 5) what they should be when going into that scenario normally. I also don't want them to die again, but give them a chance to escape. I looked up online and found some suggestions for a chase scenario that The Angry DM wrote about (https://theangrygm.com/how-to-build-awesome-encounters/). I am thinking I could do a scenario where the Free Pc's and Derek, Becklin, and Cudgel (played by the captured players) infiltrate the Outpost and rescue the Captured PC's. Then they are all chased from the outpost. I would like to have this whole scenario take one four-hour session so we can get back on track of the story as it is written so that I can easily cut away from it at any time towards the end of it (i.e. I can just tell them that they got away as time is getting towards the ending time of our gaming session).
Any help with setting up this scenario would be appreciated.
Thank You,
Mike LaPointe
