As it is I am about to run Princes of the Apocalypse for my friends. I have an idea on how to continue after they finish this campaign, I plan on having the death of the four cult leaders be a sacrifice to begin freeing the Elder Elemental Eye, Tharizdun. The party will then have to travel to the elemental planes, where the remaining princes sit in their own evil temples. They will have to defeat them and prevent the Tharizdun, the Chained Oblivion from escaping his imprisonment.
Any thoughts? Or ideas on how to make the encounters on the elemental planes tougher since they will be higher level than the creatures are meant for?
My first thought would be some sort of setback to the group. As a player this would be a little frustrating, so you'd have to handle it with care if you choose to use it, but I've read a lot about times where the DM took away, shifted, or changed the character's levels in some way. A good follow up might be to start the sequel with a cliffhanger of them getting their levels "stolen" in some way, and they are back down to a lower level and have to get them back. A one-shot I'm planning is where the group wakes up as small animals, and have to make their way though challenges to find their true forms again and my group seems enthusiastic, but they love those kinds of things. Again, it may be frustrating for the players though, so make sure its the sort of thing the players would WANT to do.
