So, I'm currently away from my physical copy of DMG and I was trying to figure out the CR rating and EXP value for an enemy warlock for the party to fight/chase. Does anyone know how to go about figuring this out, or know where to find it, since I think I might have overlooked something? (Warlock enemy is a 13th-level Fiend Warlock NPC).
Things built as characters do not have a defined CR, you have to model its hit points, other defenses, and damage output, and see what that corresponds to in the DMG. Typically it winds up at CR of 50-75% of level.
The DMG has the rules I think, but you said you're not near yours. It's a bit too much to type out, and isn't going to yield a completely satisfying result most likely.
For a general idea, there are 3 Warlocks in Monsters of the Multiverse with stat blocks. They are the equivalent of levels 15, 12, and 14 depending on their patron. But their CRs are 4, 7, and 6 respectively. This mostly comes down to how useful their powers are in combat. For your specific case, you can probably estimate around CR 6 and be close enough. Maybe a little higher if you are building them out as a full character with all their abilities.
Spellcasting enemies are extremely fragile. They have low AC and HP. They don't last long against a party of multiple characters of much lower level. It's worth giving this NPC some minions, or a solid escape plan, if you want them to last more than a round or so.
Thanks for the info. I have the NPC have full stats and abilities like a PC, but a lot of their abilities are built around mind control and deception, with some combat stuff. They have minions and can summon some back-up CR 9 demons without using spell slots, so I'm currently leaning on that CR 6 or 7 rating.
I just found a 'CR calculator' for making monsters on a website called 5e dot tools. I haven't used it before and can't vouch for it. But it does seem to be based on the DMG rules, so something like that might be fun to try out while you are on the phone.
