I am currently running a campaign where some of the players have expressed they would like to craft some of their own items. Xanathar's gives a good baseline on how to do this. It says in there that each item requires a recipe to make it. I know potions and spell scrolls are easy to develop, but what resources do you guys use for the more complicated items?
I have one player that wants to develop a weapon that deals force damage. As I understand it, Force would be considered Rare or Very Rare, so that gives me an idea where to start. If anyone of you have an easier way of searching for creatures that use this damage type please let me know.

Do you dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?
In response to your first question I usually make it a very powerful creature like a dragon or something for the high end items and more tricky creatures for more common ones. I always make them hard to kill or catch so the player really wants it. As for your second one, no, I don't.

Funny quote from campaign, "The only thing you want to do is kill everything huh?"
That's a solid idea, along the same vein the party could end up carrying out a task for a Gold/Silver dragon or something along those lines. The task is to challenge the party to see if they are worthy of receiving its knowledge. Adult and Ainchent dragons have outstanding intellects and would be able to impart knowledge on those they deem worthy.
