All right, how would you deal with such a party? I wanted to send some players into Baldur's Gate, but it's clear to me that they have other expectations. As far as I can see, there are three options. The first is to ask them to make something that would blend in a little bit better. The second would be to run a campaign that fits the player's choices better, and the third would be to play it for laughs.
How'd you handle this? Is there a setting or location that would work for these 3 amigo's?
Climate wise your best bet would be plains that were suffering from a drought and slowly turning into desert. Story wise, a port setting would work for basically any race because most people there would be from somewhere else and exotic things become mundane if they show up often enough. Either that or somewhere where mercenary work was in high demand bringing the best or at least most expensive contractors from around the world.
I'm very nearly at the place of only allowing PHB races. The short of it is, player races are options and options are only available at the DM's discretion. If I thought it was going to be a problem, I would tell them something like "PHB races only" or "Only races that appear in Faerun", as Centaurs are a M:tG race.
One thing I certainly wouldn't do is change the campaign to conform to the players character choices. The DM has a disproportionate amount of work in running a campaign and players really need to accomodate their designs. I think going the other way sets a dangerous precedent.
What’s the problem? Is it just that they’re unusual races? That will only matter as much or as little as you want it to. So decide how much you want it to matter, and warn the players of that decision. Then let them play it out and deal with their choices.
If it’s how they met, or are in the same place, put it on them. This is the town you’re in: tell me how you got here.

Each take 1d6 bludgeoning damage for walking into the bar? They could have ducked? Have fun with it.
