So my players have just started chapter 3 of Storm kings thunder. They have decided to go to Fireshear from Bryn Shander and try steal a boat as a few are big one piece fans and sailing appeals to them more than walking. I have been planning player moments for all of them and most of what they need to do for other side quests like krakens gamble are all inland.
To encourage them to explore inland rather than just sail up and down the coast should I let players who complete their player moment lvl up to 7 hence encouraging the other players to explore the sword coast to find their own unique moment I have planned for them.
Its our first ever campaign and my first time DMing so im very cautious of railroading them into exploring and would rather them make the decision themselves. If they don't find their moment for whatever reason I will just lvl them when the book says to.
Are they still heading toward Everlund/ the quests?
If they are then taking another route isn't that big of a deal at all. You can make the old tower into a lighthouse they see on the way down the shore. You can also make use of the sea random encounter table in the module.
I actually would look at this as a golden opportunity to introduce the kraken society so it doesn't just come out of nowhere later. Having them active in the waters off the sword coast seeds the idea for later so its not so random. Maybe have them trying to frame giants for an attack on humans or vice versa. Maybe there is cargo for the kraken society in the ship they take and they come after them or something like that.

Those are some great ideas thanks
