I have a group of friends who want to give DnD a go and have asked me to run a game. I have 3 campaigns on the go at the moment (not all DnD) so they know I don't have the bandwidth to carry it on as a campaign, I also it seems don't have the time, or ability to make a decent all encompassing one shot lol, every idea I have tried to jot down has turned into the start of a long adventure.
So does anyone know any good published one shots for new players? Think the day is going to run about 6-8 hours. Happy if it is railroadey
If you want something with low/no real stakes to give new players a taste of things: one D&D guy I follow suggested running the Witchlight Carnival portion of The Wild Beyond the Witchlight as a one shot: could even up the starting level to 2 if you were worried about player death... though they;'d have tot ry pretty hard to die in that one. Obviously some tweaking of the core story would be required, but that's easy enough.
The first time my group played dnd (me included as gm) we played a One-Shot called "On her Majesty's Pest Control Service". It is a level one adventure in which a city is suffering a rat infestation and thus the Queen places a law in which criminals can earn their freedom depending on the number of rats they kill and might even get a reward if they find their source.
It is designed to work as an intro or tutorial to different parts of dnd. It begins with roleplay elements with the players meeting in jail and then having to ask around the city for info on the rats. Then when they find out that they come from the sewers it gives them a chance to plan what equipment to bring to an adventure. The following dungeon begins with skill challenges, then moves to puzzles and fighting some mooks. It ends with a boss fight either against an intelligent rat swarm or a rival exterminator depending on the players' choice.
More importantly, the dungeon has different configurations to make the adventure shorter or longer depending on how much time you guys got to play or how bored or entertained the players look.

I can attest to this as I'm running it for a group of my buds and player is really new to DnD. But he's really gotten into the roleplay and is really starting to feel right at home with his PC probably some of the best RP in the group honestly.
Sorry for the repost im not really big with forums.

Any of the adventurer's league adventures are one shots.
