My players all want to participate in a fighting pit/tournament while stopping in a city. They're doing this for fun, but of course there's a prize involved for the winner. The only problem is, the party is far too rich right now because of previous circumstances, so not only would a prize in gold only add to this problem for me, but it wouldn't feel very impactful for them to win. I'll of course have betting happening outside of the fights for characters who want to have the chance of getting some gold, but i need something different for the winners.
Does anyone have any suggestions for maybe magic items, potions, or something else that i could offer? They're 6th level right now, but have gotten used to leveling quickly and receiving things generally more powerful than their level would suggest they get, because it's a big party and we're trying to get through as much as possible before the end of the school year, when lots of people will be leaving.
Thanks in advance, dndb forums have never let me down :))
Let them each pick a mount from the towns best stables (and maybe offer some cool exotic mounts like Giant Goats or Lizards, or even flying ones if you're at that point level wise) some fancy mounts are a realistic reward worth hundreds of gold and the players all get to describe the cool animal they picked.
Mounts could be fun, but they also add some headaches on the DM side (and require feeding/stabling/healing after combat). Exotic pets might be a more neutral alternative that won't give the party a power-up.
You could also do a spa day. Or a feast/parade thrown in their honor. Victorious gladiators would often be rewarded with luxury experiences and public accolades.
Depending on the campaign, perhaps they would appreciate getting an audience with the local ruler, or a political favor, or getting to preside over a festival/future tournament. Maybe this was a test, and their reward is the rights to a quest or the location of a healing cove.
A house in the town. Players love for their characters to have a base of operations. And make it a real fixer-upper, so they need to spend all that extra cash on renovating it. Then as their renown grows, they’ll probably need to hire a couple guards and other servants. It’s a good way to give them something and siphon off some of that money.
Yeah, now that I think about it, a political favor would be both useful and quite funny considering the only politician of the city they know of is one I had to make up on the spot last session. And it would push them to get their priorities in order. Thanks for this!
