Last session the dice rolled in my favor and one of my players lost her intelligence from a intellect devourer. Instead of her just gaining it back after a long rest I want to send them on a quest for an item to bring it back but i have no idea where to start. The player who lost it is fine playing a different charter for this session and next week they'll be gone, which is why i want to do this side quest so they'll be back for the end of our story arc. ANY IDEAS???
I think that makes sense, especially as a setup for explaining why that particularly character might be out of commission for a session or more. I think the solution would be to have the party meet a potion-maker... whether it's an apothecary in the city, a witch in the woods, or a traveling wizard... whatever makes sense for whatever setting you're in.
Then the potion-maker says they can craft for them a potion that will cure this person, but it requires a rare or valuable reagent. If you have a particular monster you think would be fun for the party to fight, you could just pick a body part of theirs that would make sense as a reagent to use... whether it's something like Nothic's eye, or the tail of a manticore or whatever is appropriate for your players. Alternatively, they could ask for a rare flower or mushroom or something, and by coincidence the field where it grows is currently inhabited by either a dangerous monster or perhaps a group of brigands that they'll either have to barter with or fight off to find their quarry.
I know that's some pretty generic advice... if we had more details about the level of your party and where they are at the moment I could give more specific advice.
Did they kill the Intellect Devourer? If not, could they chase it down again and transfer it's intellect (somehow) back to the PC? Perhaps they have to gain an item to do so - The Headband of Intellect Transference (patent pending) that will either restore the users INT or transfer it from the ID. Could be fun if all the sudden the PC had memories/knowledge from others, maybe switched some INT based skills, etc.
that helps alot! My party are level 5, there are 3 warlocks and a ranger( the one who lost her int). They are playing within waterdeep.
Three warlocks make me think somebody's patron is sending them on the quest or pointing them in that direction, perhaps with an ulterior motive. Like, warlock #2 gets a dream pointing them to the rare flower and the potion maker, but the dream doesn't clue them in to the other potions the flower can be used to make...

Active characters:
Carric Aquissar, elven wannabe artist in his deconstructionist period (Archfey warlock) Lan Kidogo, mapach archaeologist and treasure hunter (Knowledge cleric) Mardan Ferres, elven private investigator obsessed with that one unsolved murder (Assassin rogue) Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)
I was looking for a low level adventure and someone here recommended "The Joy of Extradimensional Spaces". It sends your group on a hunt for a magical book. You could use most of that but insert higher level monsters and harder puzzles. Make the book that is the object of the adventure one that restores intelligence.
It seems like a simple and short adventure that would make a good side quest.
