I have a Mages' Conservatory planned for my players. Deep within the conservatory is a portal to the Fire Plane. They need to get through the laboratory that has so very questionable experiments being done in there; clockwork creatures, unnatural magical creatures that the mages' have created, capture creature from the Feywild, etc. Other than just the creatures being a problem I'd like to have temptations and traps that would be guarding the laboratory. Also, the mage that is running this lab has experimented on himself, so now he is part human part clockwork wizard.
Any ideas for traps, temptations, or obstacles to make the players route through the lab harder?
Easiest type of riddle to make is an enigma. You just pick a word and describe it's definition and the players have to guess the word. It works best if you pick a word with multiple definitions because then you can contrast them for a little poetry.
Anagrams are also pretty easy to make. It's when you have a passage or phrase and some or all of the letters.
Basically pick a word or phrase and describe it or break it up into bits and put it in a sentence
Clock work puzzles/ obstacles
A fancy combination lock where you need turn the cogs to align a large orrey with certain symbols. That skyrim puzzle where you have to align the mirrors with the beams but instead your showing the right symbols
There's also the classic cog platforming style thing. An area with spinning cogs and stuff that you have to jump from or dodge components. Could make a could set up for a combat
Turning machines on and off. So there may be places where for example a room is flooded or full of gas so a machine needs to be turned on or off to clear it which blocks something else ect...

Check out Book of Challenges: Dungeon Rooms, Puzzles, and Traps on DMSGuild it's for 3rd edition D&D but I use it for inspiration or upscale the trap/puzzle to 5th edition.
