My players are currently stuck in Avernus in a homebrew campaing. I'm getting some inspiration from Descent to Avernus to play the adventure while they're in hell. And I'm trying to make them suffer a little bit from inanition while they're there. But I'm acting as if there's no water at all in there, unless someone magically make it. Is that the case? The book points out that water and food are very scarce, but can be found. Any idea how? Below the ground? Like a desert perhaps?
It would mostly be either something native to the lower planes, which may or may not be extremely harmful if consumed, or something not native that came from another world, and is more likely to be safe for consumption. It could be things wandering the wastes, or it could be goods that would have to be traded for or purchased from fiends.
I'm guessing you're not letting the party have Goodberries?
I've played Decent into Avernus. iirc there is technically water, it's just very sparse. There is ofcourse the river styx too but drinking from that will instantly feeblemind you so that's obviously not an option.
You can flavour it thus: The styx is constantly moving and changing it's course and so as such it sometimes leaves behind stagnant lakes and puddles. They're not particularly appetizing but once they're cut off from the main river all the dead souls and other effects lose their potency over time, so it is just about drinkable. It would taste revolting though.
Ofcourse you could always use magic. There are a couple spells to create or purify water, and my group just had a decanter of endless water on their person so they survived on that.
You could also go a different route. Descent into Avernus was heavily Mad Max inspired, so you could have warbands riding around on war machines hooked up to massive water tankers who you have to bargain with or attack to get hold of a water supply.
The travelling emporium also provides food and water and has a number of traders who might offer some in return for a soul coin. Imps may also appear if the need is great and offer water in return for a coin, or for a characters soul if they don't have the money to pay.
