I'm starting a campaign and one of the player is choosing to play a changeling. To work around the fact that he cannot change clothing (which i view this as interesting roleplay and options to add to the table), he's looking for a Disguise Kit to be like a carte blanche... Note that his infiltration is more about infiltrating nobility...which i'm not sure where were going to head with this because this isn't part of the campaign (They've are aware that we are playing Storm King Thunder) although i'm willing to add some options to work his background story....and can include some portions to add to campaign which is possible at different times...
For me, i view this as a 25g of value. A Fine Clothes is 15g, so this gives me the ball park at what a Disguise Kit is about....note that hes disregarding make up as it is useless to him...it feels that i'd be generous that he can craft 2 different sets of Fine Clothes with that Disguise Kit.
Buying a wardrobe seem like a good option here for roleplaying and what it brings to the table as a character and how to travel with it.......maybe stealing some ....of course and other avenues are at hand.... they all like to optimize but i don't feel like giving carte blanche; lets skip all the potential for adding to the story and the character building by having an i transform to whatever i want whenever i want....turn a corner, now i'm zorro, next corner i'm this lovely servant...not doing that...you need to transport your stuff.
Yes it does say that you can only carry one disguise at a time but i'm thinking now, what i should be defining how much usage he can do with it......i'm thinking only one fine cloth considering that there is other items than cloths in the disguise kit that are still useful
Also, i'm thinking that carrying a disguise kit, well ....if it carries lots of clothing and you're going to be searched on, they will obviously notice...you probably don't want to carry that when infiltrating.... now what i would see as an option here is to have a cloth that you can reverse on yourself to show something else...but they will have some form of advantage when searching you
What are your though on it?
Create Disguise. As part of a long rest, you can create a disguise. It takes you 1 minute to don such a disguise once you have created it. You can carry only one such disguise on you at a time without drawing undue attention, unless you have a bag of holding or a similar method to keep them hidden. Each disguise weighs 1 pound.
I'm pretty sure a disguise kit is mostly about things like makeup, wigs, and the like, and thus useless to a changeling. Just have him spend that 25gp on clothes, including at least one set of fine clothing.
I would consider a disguise kit like spell components. So the player initially buys the make up wigs etc which is what the money buys, afterwards they should be adding odds and ends so it becomes more like Sherlock holmes disguise kit, cotton balls to stick in cheeks, a pipe, glasses etc for quick and dirty appearance changes. I would assume if they wanted to look like a guard then they would require a guard uniform. The disguise kit is to ensure when they wear the uniform they don’t look like themselves. In this way for a changling I’d almost consider a disguise kit redundant
I agree that I wouldn't allow them to use a Disguise Kit as a "free costume box" that they can just pull whatever clothes they want out of. I'd recommend they just invest in "costume clothes", which cost 5gp per set. You could more reasonably justify costume clothes being designed for quick change outfits (as opposed fine clothes, which is likely properly layered and may require assistance to put on). I feel like you could even justify costume clothes being more compact so you can carry multiples at once.
I know it's not RAW, but honestly if I had that player in my party I would say if they spent 50gp on Costume Clothes I would let them say they just have a satchel full and let them pull out whatever costume they want (within reason) for the remainder of the game.
A Disguise Kit includes 3 lbs of cosmetics, hair dye, and small props lto create disguises that change your physical appearance. I never treated them as consumable like Healer's kit, which specifically comes with a number of uses. For 25 gp, you should have enought material to create disguises for the entire campaign and not have to purchase anything else.
Thanks, the argument is more about the "few pieces of cloths and props" that Tasha's description is giving...
Meaning, he wants to be able to disguise as a detective or servant or else quickly.... i've allowed him considering hes not going to use any cosmetics and similar since hes a changeling and doesn't need that portion......so a "few" (flexible on the few) pieces of non fine-cloth we've agreed on (that he is carrying, so if searched, it is noticeable), that will cover most usage for roleplay... and those are look alike to some degree, not the real-thing....so depending who he is talking to, those people may notice....commoner might not...of course, i may end up ruling well you don't have this particular cloth for this specific scenario if this comes up too often to force other avenues....we will see how it goes
I'd say the disguise kit can do a generic outfit but nothing specific it just can't conceivably hold every outfit you'd need but can hold some generic items and make up. For example you may be able to change your appearance enough to not be recognized using a scarf, eye patch or tunic to cover your clothes but not necessarily enough to emulate a specific person like a town guard as they wont have the uniform of that town. If they want to emulate some one specific I'd say they have to obtain the relevant clothes or armor which in most cases will be cheaper than the kit but has a nice feature in that generally the higher profile/ more military the person the more expensive it will be.
Of course regardless of if a disguise kit is actually used, disguise kit proficiency applies to all disguise checks. So the proficiency is worth more than the kit really. Also keep in mind this person obviously wants to use disguises so you may want to give them opportunities to do so.
Yes, i'll try to tackle characters backstories, proficiencies and interests. Although we are running Storm King's Thunder so he will have to be creative at some points to fit it in the already written encounters.... but those that i'll be creating on my own, there will be opportunities....well i hope i'll be able to give some opening on that. I'm expecting to make Chapter 3 to be very long and where we will tackle many custom quests ....and they are aware of it.
I'm starting as a GM, first session yesterday (apart from session 0). It went well. Walking north from Daggerford toward Nightstone, i had written a few encounters for lvl1. So far we are in the middle of the second one...so it was slower than what i was expecting. Not actually because of the fight but the roleplay that we've added which was cool.
I had set up the first encounter as the following
The last farm before inhabited territory leaving north from Daggerford. Husband was trying to remove a tree trunk in the backyard to make more room for the crops. He disturbed a nest of 3 cockatrices underneath. The wife seeing his husband being attack ran on the side the the house all the way to the front porch and saw the adventurer walking by 100 feets away and started running toward them for help. As we are playing with the un-ease of different races that the group represent, i had her slowly stop and throw herself in the ditch after seeing them closer. They of course went and help her and it was very difficult for her to breath and tell them that "husband, removing tree, birds birds!" and faint. They of course went on the side of the house to see the statue of a man....then at the back statues of pigs... then some noise in the coop as one Cockatrice was there poking around the chickens.... while the other 2 remained silent inside the hole underneath the tree trunk. Of course, this included descriptions of environment, DC checks etc so far but the players were scared....they didn't know what to expect and i though it was a really cool fight for 4 PC lvl1 to allow them to work together and see the group dynamic, some unknown and without being too dangerous; chances of dying were minimal.
It turns out to be really cool, and they roleplayed their characters, one making food (cooking background)(plucking the crops, cockatrice meat and eggs found in the nest) recomforting the wife, learning more about cockatrice, moving the husband etc... they did though missed on the painting that had quite a decent value that she could have give them.... told them after to allow them to see options that they can think of....one had an archeologist background which gave me the idea for the painting.....well they got free food out of this.

This would be a good explanation for a failed Charisma (Deception) check using a recognized Disguise kit. But i wouldn't automatically make it a failure because the character is using the same Disguise kit.
How i see it, the Disguise kit has finite ammount of cloths, props, dye color and cosmetics, but your creativity can let you use in an infinite numbers of ways.
If a player character was making extensive use of Disguise kit, i wouldn't have a problem with having 1-2 more kits , but to be honest this gets rarely used in most campaigns i've run or played.
