I am in the process of setting up a campaign with a few friends and I have never done an advancement by milestones or accomplishments level up scheme. Does anyone have any advice on a guide, how to set it up, or best method for this? I have seen groups that have a check list where when you complete an item on the check list, it goes towards advancement and after a set amount you get to level up, and I have seen groups where as the story arc changes or advances, the PCs level up.
I generally prefer the second approach as it feels more organic and less gamey. Basically, when I'm ready for my party to level up, they do. I try to sprinkle those level ups at the end of certain story points so that they feel like a reward for accomplishing something major and not sitting around grinding on rats and such.

Hey everyone,
I am in the process of setting up a campaign with a few friends and I have never done an advancement by milestones or accomplishments level up scheme. Does anyone have any advice on a guide, how to set it up, or best method for this? I have seen groups that have a check list where when you complete an item on the check list, it goes towards advancement and after a set amount you get to level up, and I have seen groups where as the story arc changes or advances, the PCs level up.
Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
