CR Balance is more of luck than science, so don't get too hung up on it. That said, Chapter 3 in the DMG has a section for creating Combat Encounters, which lays out the basics you can use to adjust the encounters you are running LMoP with a larger group. Also, as your game progresses, you will hopefully learn what level of encounter your group needs in the Easy, Hard, and Deadly ranges.
As a side note, have you tried using the Encounter Builder on DDB? If not, try it and see if you can recreate your encounters; you may not have all the creatures, but a good portion should be available to you, and adjust it as necessary to see what works best for you and your group.
In the event that you don't have the DMG available to you, the Basic Rules have the same guidelines for evaluating and modifying Combat Encounter Difficulty. You specifically asked for guidance in altering for Party Size. I'll second the suggestion of trying out the Encounter Builder. This should land you close, unless you've allowed house rules, or are running the opposition less-than-optimally. I would suggest taking a look at The Monsters Know What They're Doing to help keep the challenge up.

I'm new to DMing and are running Lost Mine of Phandelver. How do I calculate a balanced fight for a group of 6 players?
