We are nearing the end of a long running homebrew campaign. And I am just having creative block!
For context....
They are an evil party in a world of light and dark chasing a misguided paladin who has crossed over into the mists (domain of one of the twin goddesses of the world) to bring the trapped goddess down. The paladin has been manipulated by Fraz-Urbluu masquerading as the true god of light.
So this world is full of souls and become a proxy war for demons and devils. The party knows this.
A small child avatar of the light twin currently guides them through the mist to help their sister and confront the BBEG.
So we find ourselves at a crossroads. The party may choose to navigate this limbo like wastes of the mists invested with demons ravaging souls of innocents. I have encounters prepared for that.
They will also have a choice, thanks to the twin, to encounter trials/tests that will be measure of their true character and can deliver them to the other twin. That's where I'm stuck.
Major themes throughout have been Duality and Balance.
The trials would be random, limited to 4, but would revolve around the following (PC name for qualities that apply):
They would directly or indirectly make a choice for one aspect
-Life and Death (Jiji) -Greed and Generosity (Iris) -Beauty and Repulsive (Vanya) -Love and Hate (Avernae) -Truth and Lies (Lovis) -Courage and Cowardice (Gattis) -Arrogance and Humility (Xavier) -Strength and Fraility (Grolock) -Fulfillment and Despair (Rham)
What are some social, puzzle, environmental, or combat encounters that could be symbolic or literal to generate for the above?
You could cover a lot of these aspects at once by having the classic trial of helping a sick person. I'm not sure how it would translate into DND mechanics, but:
They are warned that *insert magical disease* is contagious, painful, and deadly; causing difficult problems with being raised from the dead if you're infected (just as an example). Then have the trial be encountering a person with said magical disease. The trial is then how they deal with the person. Do they comfort the person's pain, do they attempt to cure them, do they put them out of their misery, etc.

I know what you're thinking: "In that flurry of blows, did he use all his ki points, or save one?" Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?
