I am venturing into a new world for my own DMing. I am trying to combined a live,in house group with an On Line group. I wanted to see if anyone that has any experience with broadcasting over discord (or any other video conferencing) and having a live event at the same time?
I have done DMing for a live group and have DMed for a Roll20 group, but never combined the two.
My group regularly has people playing both online and in-person. We use Google Hangouts to broadcast video and we use a physical map, minis and all. It's not perfect, but it works. We started with a single webcam and one mic connected to a laptop. When RP-ing, we would have the webcam on the table (looking at our in-person players and the DM). When battle starts, we move the webcam so that the online players can see the board and move things as needed. The laptop screen is just the video chat: so we all can see the online players.
After a few months of that, we've made some upgrades to our set up. In the last game I DM'ed, I used my tablet as a second camera so my online players could always see me (Then, they could switch between looking at the combat map and me as they pleased). I've also been able to use and HDMI cord to connect to a TV (so my online players can be seen and heard from the TV screen, leaving the laptop screen free to use). The trickiest part comes if you play music during your game. But, I think that as long as everyone can at least be heard and all your players can see the map when combat happens, you're good.
Too tricky? You can always use an online map instead, so long as your in-person players have computers and can access it. The Roll20 map features are perfectly suited for this. Personally, I find the split between having in-person and online players more difficult than if we are all online. I'm always paranoid that I'm not giving my online players enough attention. But it's definitely doable!
Thanks for the feedback! Certainly something to think about.
I built a table to have an old LED TV sit in the base of the table so that I can use Roll20 maps with my live group, cause I can't draw a straight line with a ruler! LOL! So we have been using that to work through the starter pack but I will have some people drop out and figure that I could use the internet to back fill some open spots.
Essentially, it is going to be a mix of live persons and those playing on Roll20/Discord or whatever I can get to work. I have two laptops with webcams and a third webcam that I hook up to an old desktop with a wireless card.
