Me and a friend are planning a Christmas one-shot with 2 dms. One of us plans to actively try and kill the party the other is only trying to help. The party won't know whose who though. How would this work mechanically without us just splitting up what needs to be done as a dm and make the players suspicious of which one is trying to kill them?
1. One of us plans to actively try and kill the party.......
2. How would this work mechanically........
1. DM's should never actively try to kill the party......the DM is god for all intents and purposes.... so this does not work. If the DM is actively trying to kill the party they can just drop an ancient Greatwyrm into the game and TPK!
A better approach would be to have 2 players in the game who are acting as Fey, who know the plot and are working on aiding or harming the party. Make it impossible to go without them, and make them ethereal or something so they can't just kill them. Fey Ghosts? Or Projections, so they can't do anything themselves?
The two players will work as shoulder angels/demons and try to pursuade the characters to do things. Make it clear what their goals are, so they know to work towards them. Advise the evil one that they aren't bound by "always tell lies" or anything, and they will need to build the trust of the group. Add a few key points in the dungeon for the Fey to interact with, but otherwise they are spectators & roleplay only.
We did this but with one DM when I was a kid in 2nd edition. DM went back and forth between two rooms while getting everything ready then after a couple of hours of doing this both parties met each other and the fight was on.
Also, when I play 5E I try to kill our group in every one shot. Its a one shot...its supposed to be fun but I like to make it nightmare fuel too. 5E is too easy to play and to kill stuff.
Not sure how you would do it with 2 DM's. Would it be at the same time or separate sessions? If it was two different parties and there was some kind of conclusion/ event where they were meeting up or something I could see that. If its the same party and you are bouncing back and forth between DM's it could get very confusing very quickly.
