I’ve never actually played or dmed any DND however I’ve been fascinated by it for the past couple years and have wanted to desperately. That being said, I have no idea if this idea could actually work but I thought of a way to play fantasy “football” in DND but with jousting? I’m not sure if the gameplay mechanics would even make sense here but here’s everything I’ve come up with to make it work (without knowing basically any rules of DND). Please give me feedback and suggestions and let me know if this would even work.

Jousting teams,
Create a list of (n) players x 6 jousters. Each jouster will have randomly rolled stats. Strength will obviously help a lot but a character with high charisma could also have higher chances of landing a crit as they’re more confident.
first session is draft day and each player must select 5 jousters. Since there are 6 jousters per players, there is always a pool of extra jousters you can trade in and out. Players must play 4 each week (session)
The more times a jouster is used by a player the higher chance of injury (which is a D12 roll wherein its base is 1 is death and 2 is injury but as the jouster is used more it proceeds to rise until it gets to 1-3 is death and 4-6 is injured)
Trades can happen out of session and players will notify dm.
Different builds of general manager (gm) will effect how their jousters perform too with wizards being able to enchant the pole or bards giving inspiration increasing chance of hitting opponents in a crit strike.
Same rules as regular fantasy wherein the loser of the league must perform a punishment.
My DM sort of did something like that the first time I watched a one-shot in person. There were so many people there that day he found an idea online to have them all take turns in a tournament facing or taming monsters for profit. Some actually chose to sneak in and free the monsters instead, but it could have very well worked like betting on certain adventurers NPC or not.
I would have the player be the 6th jouster though just so there is some more direct “combat.” Also, unless they use Charisma for attacks like a Pact of the Blade (representing), i would instead make their charisma influence how many npc’s are betting on them to win against the odds.
That is a lot for a DM to keep track of. It could be fun for someone who likes creating characters. Maybe even a way for them to bring back their favorite NPC’s from over the years.
But yeah, I would say let people bet on who they want, including themselves and let them see how much money they can make. Gambling in DnD can be fun for some just to feel wealthy and see what they spend or even invest it on. Maybe even instead of NPC’s everyone makes a character, but instead of their gold representing their money it is you the bystanders that you can use, bet or invest how you want!
One last thing: there isn’t really a rule for jousting in DnD, so it may be simpler to have them just fight. If you want to stick with jousting, perhaps it is 3 rounds of combat where they roll their damage and just see who deals the most damage. Maybe crits knock them off their horse automatically for 3 points. Maybe so much of a hit shatters their lance for 2 points. Maybe whomever deals the most damage gets the 1 point for connecting, or instead of doing damage you just roll to see if you connect or not for the one point. Whoever has the most points after 3 rounds (or if you do damage based whoever is still conscious/alive) wins. The only thing with going the damage route is combat is meant to last awhile, so players have too much health typically to go down in three hits. Maybe depending on your build if you have sneak attack or smites. Also, I don’t think they jousted to the death though, but I could be wrong and it is your story!
There were rules for jousting back in the day obviously, so go ahead and look them up and see what you can come up with. You might have to look into how professional or ancient betting works too.
Good Luck and please bet responsibly! ;)

I have been playing since the 1989 season and never heard of that.
NA
TBH, it would be more interesting to draft monsters and have them fight each other in a tournament arena as the "sessions"
