Me again with my SKT campaign. The players are leaving Nightstone and last session discussed about going to Waterdeep before Goldenfields. The players said because some of them are part of factions and wanted to tell thier leaders what had happened in Nightstone. I didn't think much too it as I thought I could still have the cloud giant take them to goldenfields first. It made sense to me as one of the side quests after golden fields would take them to waterdeep. Also the players would have more to tell the factions after the goldenfields fight.
But now after chatting to a player, they seem really set on wanting to go to Waterdeep as they want to swap thier weapon out. Obviously they have no idea about the cloud giant taking them goldenfields.
I'm just not sure which way to play this. 1. Let the players go to Waterdeep then have the cloud giant pick them up after. Or 2. Have the cloud giant appear take them straight to goldenfields?
Am I railroading them if I have the cloud giant appear? I could make it so the player can buy a weapon in goldenfields if they want. But would the players be annoyed about not going to Waterdeep first.
For me, I was thinking the flow of the game, go to goldenfields then they can head to Waterdeep other wise it would be waterdeep then goldenfields then back to waterdeep again.
Once again, I'm over thinking. Any thoughts, ideas and advice would be great. Thanks
If their main motivation is swapping the weapon, why not make their desired new weapon available either in the Golden Lion Coster (I think it’s called) or in the armoury of Nightstone castle?
Have the Cloud Giant’s castle turn up as intended. They don’t have to go with him, but I’d be surprised if they weren’t happy to change their plans. If they’re still set on travelling to Waterdeep first, perhaps he’ll agree to take them there before Goldenfields. (Even with the detour, it’s probably still a much shorter trip than the one to Bryn Shandar.) He could set them a time limit in Waterdeep to avoid them getting too sidetracked.

Thanks, I like the idea of giving them a time limit I'm waterdeep. Or the Lion costers (forgot about them) they always have weapons ready to swap. 😅
