So currently my players are planning on taking on one of the potential BBEGs, and are at one of his bases. The problem is, once they take out this base, I'm not sure what to do next. His other generals are to powerful for my party, and El goblino himself is Extremely difficult, with 350 hp. For story reasons, I can't bring myself to nerf him and his allies. Also, my parties scaling is uneven, with one player at level 4, another at 2, the rest at 1. What should I do?
Essentially: An encounter with the BBEG before the players are ready to take them down can be a great way to prime them for a final conflict and build emnity between them.
First up, fix that party scaling outright. Let the level 1 character level up after 1 fight, then all the level 2s level up after the next fight and so on. Your game will not work if there is a big level disparity.
Since you control the entire world, you can just decide what challenges the PCs face. Nobody can suggest what the PCs in your game should do next, but the easy answer is: they should take on level appropriate challenges. Have them investigate a dam which a lieutenant has been making. Have them go to find the old witch of the woods who has some item they could use. Have them discover the baddies are extorting local businesses. Have them be hunted through a forest by a couple of griffons. Whatever you like, the options are limitless.
Ok thank you, fortunately the party leveling up system will work with the combat encounters I have planned.
And yes, this I shall take into consideration. I'll throw in some basic start up fodder for them to really get XP, and expand the world after this session, so they have alot of variety.
Thank you for the video and recommendation. I plan on having the party meet their current BBEG in a tavern. He will talk to them politely as he can be (he will kiss a corpse during their convo for no reason) and when the party inevitably fights or tries to kill him, he will body them. They will be alive, but wonder why. This question shall burn as their forced to evade his troops while he sends them magic items, and when they explore the open world that is unforgiving to newbies, thanks to some other threats running around the planet.
