Just curious what is the most out there campaign or session you have run as a DM? What is the riskiest idea you have had, the sort of idea you knew could end badly but could also had the potential to lead to a cool moment in the game? What is the weirdest concept you have had for a game or setting? What would you say is the most creative you have been as a DM and how did it turn out?
Just want to know what are the wildest and wackiest ideas you have ever tried to run as a DM?
I did a level 20 Christmas one shot where the party had to get a last minute present for a neighboring monarch or else two kingdoms would go to war, and they had to go to a magical shopping mall where in all the shops, every magic item in the game was on sale.
They started with like 10K gold each and no other items, and had to deal with encounters that, in addition to draining normal resources, could also drain their gold by forcing them to buy stuff randomly.
The mall was using magical advertisements to drain the lands of gold, so all over the place there were mind-controlled npc's spending all their money that the players could try to save, and also creatures from around the planar system had a presence in the mall. One encounter was that the players had to fight a Pit Fiend and their posse who were picketing one of the shops because it's powerful items being on sale for money was really cutting into their souls market, with people just buying stuff instead of selling their souls for them.
The whole point was that the players had to use their best judgement to find a gift they thought would please the monarch and heal diplomatic ties between kingdoms. They had to make sure they bought gear and weapons they'd need to get through the mall dungeon while still having enough gold left over for a good enough gift. They ended up buying a Well of Many Worlds, but in the same shop there was a Deck of Many Things with a price tag that read "negotiable".
They negotiated, and got both, bringing the Deck back to the king who gave them the mission, and everyone pulled a card, and the results prolonged the game for like another 3 hours and was some of the best D&D I've ever run.
I'm currently playing a little D&D game with some friends at school. The setting is a prison, as the players have committed numerous counts of arson. One of them discovered a tunnel being dug by some prison inmates, and he joined them. He then came up with a plan to get one of the incandescent lightbulbs, smash it, and make white phosphorus powder, which is extremely flammable. Even with his knowledge of fires, he still has a small chance that he'll actually manage to make it, which us why I am allowing it. If he does manage to get lucky and make the chemical, he's going to be able to burn down the entire prison.
