I am relatively new to DND, my DM has given some of us the challenge to either create a one-shot or a side-quest of some sort for us to take a turn DMing. I had a basic idea of our normal character being captured, so the players have to make new characters in classes they've never played before to go and save their current character. Does anyone have tips or ideas for making this fun for my group or tips on what to do as my first time DMing?
If it matters my current group is a Wizard, Oathbreaker Paladin, Arcane Trickster Rogue, Moon Druid, Battle Master Fighter, Eloquence Bard, and a Gloomstalker Ranger (my character). Most of the people playing don't have a lot of experience playing and the idea is to help people learn the game more and explore different classes.
Cool idea for your DM to have everyone host their own side-story thing. My recommendation would be to go for an easier, more bite-sized idea. Asking the whole group to make new characters for a side quest, when most of your players are new to DnD, could be frustrating.
For stuff like this I love to pay homage to classic fairy tales or classic stereotype adventures. Like a goblin/orc dungeon crawl to save a captured villager, or a gingerbread house in the woods where kids have been known to go missing. With a bog hag or something inside.
