Hi all, I'm new to D&D and I'm DM'ing DOSI for the first time. The source book says that after each chapter (e.g. Caves, Shipwreck, etc) the characters all level up. We are (hopefully) finishing the Caves soon. I'm not sure if I should have leveled up the characters as soon as they destroyed the orange crystal, or when the best time is.
I'm actually a little glad I didn't, because after they destroyed the orange crystal one of the characters thought they upset the mushrooms by making the room more sunny, and decided to stuff the hole again with their bedroll. So, that will be interesting. On the other hand, maybe had they leveled up they wouldn't have derailed things, haha.
Any advice for how to handle this and when a "clean" time is to level them up? After they go back to Tarak and tell him the good news (assuming they un-fill the hole yet again? or regardless?), or when they realize the mistake and clear the gap for a 2nd time?
Thanks!
Edit: they also chipped away a bunch of the purple crystal and put it in their backpacks. Open to ideas on what type of crystal that should be. Amethyst is probably worth far too much. I guess I could say it is Amethyst but very fractured or something so no one wants to buy it for very much.
I think there are a few ways to let them level up.
You could let them have the hit die/hp and other automatic level benefits right away, but not spells or special abilities until they have completed the quest and had time to rest and understand their new abilities. This way they should be eager to finish it and tie up loose ends.
Or wait until after they tell Tarak their results.
And as for the crystals, they could be purple quartz. It's pretty but not worth much.
Seeing that it is a beginner adventure, it should tell you when to level the party. You can do it as soon as they complete an objective or when they return to the temple.
I only just played the cave part of the adventure so don't know exactly what else there is.
You can give them 1 gp to 10 gp crystals without too much worry. Say they got 6d6 of them worth selling.
